Convincing wife about computer upgrade

We've all been there: being single you could get whatever you wanted whenever you wanted it. Then you tie the knot (shackles, leash, ball and chain, whatever) and suddenly your wallet is significantly lighter and the Corvette is gone. Yes, this personally happened to me!

I'm looking for strategies/tactics/maneuvers/hints that can convince my wife that, yes, a computer upgrade makes sense and is a Good Thing. Spare me the macho "who wears the pants" routine; we have kids and other financial responsibilities that come first.

My system sucks real good. Windows 98 takes about 4 minutes to load. It frustrates me! I can eek out maybe 6 FPS in Castle Wolfenstein

Poor guy. Just buy a used box with the $600 president Bush is sending you. You can tell the wife the government bought it for you. The kids will need a better computer for school, etc.

If she is really hasseling you about it just say one of the components broke. Fiddle around so that the computer refuses to reboot and pretend you're playing with it trying to fix it. Then conclude after 3 horus that your mobo shorted out and blew the CPU at the same time and you think all the IDE components are dead. Tell her the only thing that is still good is the monitor and the case and maybe the soundcard. Tell her you're so pissed you're going out tomorrow to replace it!

Actually, my mass storage device (2.1 GB WD) passed away a few weeks ago. I dug out an old 220MB to complement my abundant 850MB. I should have parlayed that failure into a full system crash!

I think its time for a group hug. So you have 1070 megs hardrive space with a p133 &amp; 32 megs ram?

Even if you're quite badly off anything you can scrape by will upgrade that thing bigtime!

Seriously, you could get a machine better than that for free from emachines.

If your lady doesn't want to spend the money, get a free (or damn cheap, $200 or so at most) computer from eMachines.

Do both you and her use the computer? If so, have everything and anything load on the startup when she tries to boot up. It should take a while for the computer to boot up then. State the computers broken and demand you have a new one

Just try it, you may never know. Better yet, open it up, unplug a few items (namely power switch) and &quot;show&quot; her that it doesn't work.

Ask her if it is okay for you to have a second job for a week or two. If she okay with the idea then you shouln't have a problem with making some extra cash for the puter, and have some left over for a baby sitter &amp; a night out the show &amp; restaurant.
