You can find a Toshiba DVD SD-M1402 for 71.95 (12xdvd, 35xDAE, 40xr) at All Star Shop. Their RSR is 6.1/7.0, pretty reliable I guess.

Sorry, didn't want to spoil your deal but a couple people recommended Toshiba for it's price. It costs 9.14 for SH from All Star Shop.

tkim: the advertised dvd speed, frankly, isn't that important. that's the speed it uses when reading dvd _data_ disks. things like encarta on dvd, games on dvd, stuff like that. sure, coming up there will be more things on dvd, but i don't look at the dvd speed too closely myself. dvd movies all play at 1x, just like all audio cds play at 1x.

i look closer at the cd speed, as that's what'll be in there most of the time anyways. other things like dae ripping speed and other compatibility stuff may be more important to you. the design of this drive in particular is pretty cool, you might like the shiny blue bezel.

Question, is this drive designed for a custom case where there is an opening for the Tray ONLY?

It seems like the tray sticks out more than the drive. This wouldn't look good in your standard flat front case.

No this is for all cases. If you read the info, it states that the part sticking out is a limited edition Blue Streak cover. You can take off that part but you will be exposing the tray and that is not good as dust will get in. I like it.

Compgeeks will never get another dime out of me. Their customer service is awful.

I ordered something that turned out to be out of stock despite what the website said. They charge your credit card first thing. I had to call them 3 times and finally got a supervisor who said they would take credit for it. It took another month but they eventually credited me.

I have real problems with 1) Sites that can't keep their inventory straight on their website (buy.com's pretty bad about that too) 2) Charge me regardless (Buy.com at least only charges you for items that ship.

On top of all that their shipping is pretty high.

After a mixup on my part, I finally got this drive on Tuesday. Installed it and first I ripped a CD. Started at ~12X and by the time it was on the last song it was at ~20x and this was a CD that only had about 40 min. of songs. Don't know what the max DAE is probably ~24.

Last night I flashed the drive and it is now region free
