Cool Maxtor HDD story

About 5 years ago I purchased a 17GB 5400 rpm HDD for around 200 ATA-33

Maybe 3 years ago it died so I RMA'd it and recieved a 27GB 5400 rpm HDD ATA-66

That HDD died last week and I RMA'd it and recieved a 40GB 7200 rpm HDD ATA-133!!!

WOOHOO when this one dies I will RMA it and wash rinse repeat.

don't all the replacement drives fall under the original 3 year warranty?

ie. if its been 3 years, and youve had an rma 1 year ago, and the 1 year old replacement drive craps out, its no longer warrantied.

Nope, he got new drives, which means new serial #'s. Maxtor makes a big database of all their serial numbers and set?s them to correspond to a certain date when entered on their web site warranty checker. So it?s no different from getting a retail drive.

I find it hard to believe they upgraded you to a 7200 rpm HDD when 5400's are all over the place.

I found it hard to believe also, but it happened.

Once I got the new drive from RMA I googled the model # and lo and behold it was a 40gb 7200 ata133 drive w00t! maybe that was the smallest drive the RMA dept had on hand at the moment.

I dunno how I kill the drives. I don't run them 24-7 now that I'm out of the dorms and have to pay for electricity, but I do do a lot of downloading and decompressing of files as well as backing up videos to my hdd and stuff...so very disk intensive stuff

I'm about to RMA a 2.5 year old 17" monitor to Sylvania. I hope I get a similar deal.

I RMAed my Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM ATA/66 and got a 60GB 7200RPM ATA/100 back.

Oh crap, I just tore apart an old 6gb hdd that I was suppose to RMA. I thought they would not give me anything above 10gb.
