Cool 'n' Quiet slows down CPU too much

I have an A64 3400+ w/ stock heatsink and fan. I enable Cool 'n' Quiet, but it bottlenecks my FPS so I only get ~45 FPS in Doom 3 on all resolutions and ~78 in UT2K4 at all resolutions. My System properties tab says its running at 2.4 GHz though. Is there a problem w/ Cool 'n' Quiet? Anyone else having this problem?

*EDIT* CPU-Z says it running at 210MHz x 5. Thats quite an "underclock".

I just thought of something. would adding anoter stick of memory solve it? currently only have 1 512 stick (my dad is borrowing my other one)

*EDIT* didn't work...

Disable CnQ and benchmark your games again. If it is better, leave CnQ disabled. If it isn't better then it isn't CnQ holding you back.

Something tells me you will not see better framerates with it disabled...

This is a case of the user not being informed. Not a fault with the processor architecture.

But I agree with AnonymouseUser, disable Cool n' Quite and see if your games perform any better. They probably won't. Why? Because Cool 'n' Quiet speeds the processor back up when a resource heavy task starts. When you aren't running something like that it slows the processor down to converse electricity and reduce heat emissions.]

Maybe the problem lies with your ram? i have not tried CnQ yet, but on my system with CnQ off I'm getting up to 60 fps on doom3 when looking at non graphic intensive parts and usually 45 thereabouts during action, i think with the power your system has over mine you would do better than thata

with CnQ disabled, my benchmarks in doom 3 1600x1200, high quality jump up to 60FPS. but then the fan speed almost becomes unbearably loud. it spins at ~5700RPM

I just realized that you are overclocking your A64, so it is no wonder that the stock fan is extremely noisy at full speed.

Herein lies the real problem. Your A64 isn't speeding up when it should. You have another problem, either in software (OS) or with the mobo. It may even have something to do with overclocking.

What BIOS is your mobo running? According to Asus, the BIOS K8NE1003 patches CnQ, and they have since released K8NE1005. I think you need to upgrade your BIOS.

have you thought of upgrading your hsf?

EDIT: I understand that you may not want to do water cooling. However I water cooled my cpu, chipset, and gpu and it runs super quiet while giving much better temps than stock hsf.

I use Cool 'N Quiet on my rig with my 2.2 Ghz 3200+ NC up at 2.3 Ghz and in windows it runs at 1 ghz and about 1.05V, and then will speed up to 1.8 Ghz usually when I open an app or a folder or something. 2.3 (I assume, can't really check of course) when I run something CPU intensive like a virus scan or a game. You honestly don't need more than the 1 ghz for normal windows stuff like downloading, word processing, whatever. My idle is about 30C and load is upwards of 50 now with the OC, before it was like 28 and 43. Just my experiences with it, I'm using the Thermaltake Venus cooler I think (whichever one comes with the AMD EPP bundle).

CnQ works fine on that motherboard - you just need to install the driver provided by AMD (also at Asus' support page), make sure BIOS is at 1004 or higher, and (important) change your Power Scheme (control panel) to Minimal Power Management.

I have the same problem, turning on CnQ lowers my frame rates DRASTICALLY-- I don't think that it is speeding the CPU back UP when it needs to... =\ So I just leave it turned off.

"Switch to Intel. "

yeah jump a cliff while your at it, why switch to Intel when a EE is within 1 frame of a 3000+ in doom III which costs about a tenth less.
