Geez, I wouldn't even know where to start to learn that kind of stuff on my own. It took me long enough to track down the meaning of certain terms like "circuit common" or "voltage drop", or to figure out how a transistor works, such as how it can "amplify" power transfer.
Of course, I only had a single hobby-level book on the subject, which was more geared toward building things, and not much on how they work.

"Circuit common" - I finally figured that out, but didn't know why they couldn't just call it "negative" or "ground."

"Voltage drop" - finally got that figured out once I learned what voltage and amperage were.

Transistors - they don't amplify current, just as a faucet doesn't amplify the work your hand does when you turn it on. It's just a valve to control the flow of electricity.


Crazy to be able to learn this stuff on your own. I'd have loved to know how to even go about doing that, as in, where to even begin to look.

Nothing feels better than the feeling of voiding warranties. It's a disorder, a sickness just like addiction to drugs or sex. But the end result is usually far prettier and sometimes even practical.

I built a furby that shot lasers out of his eyes but it was deemed too dangerous for demonstration - despite using Class IIIa lasers. Speaking of furbies has anyone seen one outside of its cover? They are fairly intimidating on their own.

Set one on the dashboard of your car with a smoke canister connected to an alarm sensor so he blows smoke into the interior and you won't have anyone steeling your ride. Adding subtle touches like a genuine deer antler steering wheel and voodoo dice from the rearview greatly augment the effect.
