This is a good price, but just keep in mind that unless you actually own a Dell computer, getting one of these Dell OEM drives replaced under warranty is just about impossible. You will run into a brickwall trying to get warranty work because Dell will continually ask for the service number of your notebook or desktop Dell computer, which an OEM drive doesn't have.

So you have to decide whether to gamble or not. Myself, I am 50/50 on my Dell OEM drives -- 80GB Seagate, dead, neither Dell or Seagate will do warranty work; 40GB WD still running OK.

Can you get Toshiba warranty?

As far as I know IBM does all warranty service.

I wonder if this could be used in a Nomad Jukebox C. My 6 gig drive has 1089 songs on it and no room for more. I WANT MORE! This would be SweeeEEEeeeeEEEeeeeeT!

Hank

ps I know I could reencode as WMA or lesser bitrate MP3 or even (God Forbid!) delete some files, but who wants to do that.

IBM sold hard drive business to Hitachi, I don't want Hitachi drive.
Toshiba drive is one of the fastes laptop drives now.

Thanks for warranty warning, I actually own Dell laptop and planning to replace 6GB drive with 40GB

No, the TravelStar GNX series is THE fastest laptop hard drive available. This Toshiba has more cache, but lower performance.

I have this drive, it's great.

But the IBM GNX40 (8 mb cache) still beats it in benchmarks

i have this drive. its not much faster than a regular 4200rpm 2mb cache drive, but well, at this price (i got mine for $125 on fs/ft new) its a good drive, just for the fact that it has 40 gb.

What about IBM/Hitachi quality?
Too many complains about IBM/Hitachi compare to Toshiba.

I really worry about heat. What is your experience?

I've never used the IBM before, but I read that they're decent. I read a review found by google.
Dell had it beat by a slight margin in most tests.

For more insight, go to the Dell forums.
A few say that they're loud and click a lot, others say they're fine... not very consistent reviews.

edit: oooh, you were asking about my TOshiba
In that case, it's not too hot at all, and a lot quieter than the original IBM Travelstar 20 gig that was in there.
But it sucks a little more battery, obviously.

If only they carried the IBM travelstar 40gnx.... *sigh*

I concur!

IBM is fast, but loud as hell. Rattles like a tin can when seeking, it's horrible. I switched my GNX with the Toshiba GAX and it's much more silent. Performance is about the same I can't tell the difference.

the toshiba is very quiet, and very cool running. the last ibm i had an ibm 20gn, was very noisy. ibm's for some reason tend to develop a bearing problem when they get older, where they make a lot more noise, even brand new they are noisier. the miniscule perfomance difference between the mk4019gax and the 40 gnx are not worth the added noise.

I have the IBM one, got it for like $130 off of FS. This is a GREAT price, if not for the 16 MB cache, 40 GB itself is probably worth $128.

I think I'll go ahead and order this drive.
My 6GB drive is full and started showing some bad clusters.

$128 is what I expected to pay for 4200 rpm drive, so getting 5400 for this price is a steal.
BTW, they charge tax, so total for me will be $137

Usually just the Business side of Dell charges tax. The Home side has never charged tax to me in Wash. St. Don't forget Ebates for a little more.
