2 quick questions:

1. Did you use the old IAA 2.2.2, or did you find a way to modify IAA 2.3.0 to work with mobile chipsets?
2. After installing IAA, does hibernation take a lot longer than without IAA? After I installed IAA 2.2.2 in WinXP SP1, the hibernation process (copying from RAM to hard drive I presume) slowed to a crawl on my laptop.

The best IAA to use for mobile chipsets is V2.22. Don't bother hacking V2.30, doesn't make any sense.

If you want MAX performance, then select "DISABLED" for both "power management" and "acoustic management" for your Hard Drives in the IAA. "DISABLED" is faster than "MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE".

I don't use hiberanation on my laptop so I couldn't tell you if I have the same problem.

I used the old IAA 2.2.2. Initially, I downloaded 2.3.0, and my chipset wasn't supported so I stopped there. TheTechnique told me about 2.2.2, so I tried it out and got those scores. I haven't modified the settings yet, however. I'm not sure what it is set at currently because I don't have the machine with me right now. They should be in their default settings since I didn't modify them.

Got me. It's a Hitachi Dk23EB-40. Installed it on my Dell Inspiron 8100. The Hatichi is fast and quiet. What a difference a fast hd will make. Couldn't be happier.

I found this on the Hitachi web site .. that this 40G /2 MB drive has this

"32-bit RISC micro processor, shock sensor, S.M.A.R.T. "

Does this give this HDD a edge over Toshiba ??

Mine seems much hotter than the previous Toshiba on N600c. How's your feeling? Much hotter or not?

I tested hibernation after installing the IAA and it seems that hibernation speed is not affected. It seems just as fast/faster than with my old 4200 RPM IBM Travelstar.

I attempted to change my hard drive settings within the IAA and it would not let me modify the Advanced Power Management setting. It is on Minimum Power Consumptioin Without Standby and reports that other settings are not supported by the device (Hitachi Hard Drive).

I tested standby after trying to change the setting and my Inspiron seems to take a long time to return to the OS from standby. It took considerably longer than coming back from hibernation. Also, the system did not run correctly when returning, mouse clicks were slow and there were other problems. These issues may have to do with the bios revision and power management rather than the drive itself, however.

Does it behave the same without IAA installed? Standby worked fine for me with IAA 2.2.2, but it adversely affected hibernation. Sounds like it might be the opposite for you.

Well .. i had called up Dell to tell them to send me the Toshiba .. since they had shipped the Hitachi one ... the CSR told me it is a typo on their side .. they don't carry 16MB cache HDD .. period.

Did some body buy the Toshiba one from Dell itself ????

Anyways .. she gave me a 10$ credit towards the Hitachi one ... so total came out to be 80 bucks ... not bad for a 40G / 2Mb cache HDD.

Does anyone's Hitachi drive make an absurdly loud sound when you power off the laptop? Mine sounds like someone stepped on a small bird or something.. like a high pitched "BzzzzoOWW"

It makes me think the drive is getting parked too quickly..

Ya, I think it's normal... Don't forget this is a TINY platter (2.5" drive) spinning at 5400RPM. You're going to hear some VERY high pitched whining noises when it does something dramatic (like complex seek operations or parking)... Overall it's whisper quiet, just sometimes I hear little high pictched noises here and there when I install applications.

But yes, when I shut down I hear it go "peeee-zow!!!". I think it must be normal...

Good to hear. This drive is SO DANG FAST too! I swapped out the stock 60GB drive in my Apple Powerbook and stuck this one in.. boot time was reduced by half, and apps load QUICKLY. It's like a processor upgrade almost.

It *is* pretty loud tho. I notice drive activity makes a lot more noise than the old one.

Anyways .. she gave me a 10$ credit towards the Hitachi one !

Damn, the CSR didn't give me jack when I complained. Here is a link to test between IBM, Hitachi, and Toshiba. It seems Hitachi is head of the class in tern of speed.

Hmmmm, maybe Windows XP power managment is keeping the driver quieter in a Windows PC than in a MAC one? My drive is whisper quiet. Or maybe your previous drive was absurdly quiet and you got spolied!

Yes, it's the fastest. In fact, I've gotten 634 on my PCMark2002 HD score for the same drive...

I'll have to try testing standby before installing the App Accelerator at some point. I got a new max HDD score of 642 with one of my recent tests!

Nothing secret. It's all in the description.
I put in the XP re-install disc.
Tell it to create the partitions (only a single partition for the 642 test).
Have it install.
Install XP Video Drivers (mine is a GeForce2Go).
Install FanGUI (to calculate CPU Speed).
Install PCMark2002.
Install Intel 845MP Chipset.
Install Intel Application Accelerator.
Test away until I get a new peak.
I the get nicest numbers 2-3 tests after a fresh reboot.

That doesn't bring it down to below $100. I get ~$113 shipped. Are you using another coupon?

Yes, there is a stackable 15% coupon that was emailed to some people... It is one-time use only though, so you need to find someone who is willing to give it up to you...
