I had a Compaq 2800T with the 16MB Toshiba. It was very quiet and fast. I tried the IBM GNX on the 2800T as well, it was fast but darn loud. I sold that laptop last month.
Now, I have an IBM T30 it came with a 40GN (4,200rpm 40GB0 hdd. I just went ahead and ordered from Dell to replace the Deathstar. I am hoping to get either drive (Toshiba or Hitachi, most likely Hitachi). As long as the Hitachi is quiet I will be more than happy. Cost me $107 to NC w/tax. Go to f a t w a l l e t . com for dell coupons they have lots posted there in Hot Deals secton.

Will report back when I get it next week.

i think Hitachi drives are actually IBM travelstar, after Hitachi bought IBM's fab recently?

Not yet, both brand's models are available, just that Travelstars now say Hitachi instead of IBM. But the model numbers remain unchanged for both IBM and Hitachi.

For everyone having problems resuming from standby or hibernation, it is caused by the Intel Application Accelerator ("IAA") V2.22...

I have modified the .inf from the V2.22 to enable installing of the V2.30 IAA. I have explained it at the infoarena.com forums...

Everything works great with the V2.30 IAA installed...

Great! I was hoping someone would do this. The change history file for 2.3.0 lists improvements specifically aimed at the mobile chipsets. I'm not sure why they decided to remove the mobile chipsets from the .inf file for the release version of 2.3.0.

I tested my machine again with a fresh install. Before installing the IAA, standby worked. It works now with IAA installed too (v 2.2.2). I didn't test standby extensively last time I guess, may have just not worked that time I tested it. I usually hibernate, not standby.

Thanks for fixing the inf file for 2.3.

Hitachi warranty information
It looks like these drives are warranted by the distributor, not Hitachi.
If you go to http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/pre_rma.htm, you'll see that there is an area called: Warranty for Hitachi Travelstar DK23xx and Ultrastar DK32xx. That page shows that the distributor provides warranty for the drive.

The page you listed above to acquire an RMA number does not take the Model number as a part number.
There is actually no part number on my drive.

Since I don't own a Dell notebook, I guess I am going to take a gamble on this drive. Hitachi (maybe an IBM) probably make pretty reliable drives, so it might not be too bad a gamble. If I get at least one year out of the drive, I won't complain too much. Three or even more years would be fantastic. If it dies in a few months I'll be pissed.

From visiting a few websites, it appears that virtually all notebook drives are OEM versions where you return to the original place of purchase for warranty work. That being the case, where you purchase the drive becomes more and more critical. Always buy from someone you know will be in business for the next year or so.

For some reason my Hitachi drive won't run IBM or Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test. It says it is not a recognized IBM drive. I got a virus on my HDD (already) so I had to reformat using IBM's old Wipe program and a DOS boot disk.

I would think that Dell would service this drive even if it's not in a Dell. I called to return a product before, and when they asked me for the service tag, I just told them that it was not a machine that I was returning, it was a peripheral. They proceeded to the next question rather than requiring a service tag.

Perhaps you can find the service tag of a friend's expired Dell laptop if you need service on it and say you bought that laptop from them and were using the drive within that laptop.

Again, I would assume that Dell would warrant the drive in a machine with an expired warranty, but I am not sure. I don't see how they could require that users extend their laptop warranty in order to honor warranty on a peripheral. What if we were buying a keyboard or RAM?

Read the back of your packing slip - 90 days warranty if not installed in a Dell system.

Did installing IAA result in a significant slowdown when going into hibernation?
Without IAA, the hibernation progress bar speeds along nicely. (I'm running WinXP SP1) With IAA (either 2.2.2 or 2.3.0), the hibernation progress bar crawls along. I'd say it's 5x slower, so it's not something you'd have to time to notice. Uninstalling IAA solves the problem, so thankfully, it's not an issue that requires a reinstall of the OS to resolve. There is no difference in speed resuming from hibernation with and without IAA.

I'm trying to determine whether this is simply a characteristic of having IAA installed, or whether it's just my particular laptop configuration.

I'm more concerned about battery life than performance. Does the hatachi suck up more battery than the harddrive in my brand new SONY SRX99 (4200 RPM hd)? Thanks

Could someone please give me this piece of information? It doesn't have to be exact, it could be from your experience. If you have a few minutes just answer yes or not as to weather the new harddrive (5400rpm) sucks up more battery than your old harddrive (4200rpm).

Thanks in advance.

From the Toshiba site... Here is the power consumption of the 5400 rpm drive:

Logic +5V(±5%)
Start 5.0watts (max)
Seeking 2.9watts (typ)
Reading/Writing 2.5watts (typ)
Idle 1.05watts (typ)
Standby 0.25watts (typ)
Sleep 0.1watts (typ)

Here are the specs of one of their current 40 gig 4200 rpm models:

Logic +5V(±5%)
Start 2.7watts
Seeking 2.45watts
Reading/Writing 2.25watts
Idle 0.8watts
Standby 0.25watts
Sleep 0.1watts

and a current 20 gig model, the size your laptop probably has

Logic +5V(±5%)
Start 2.7watts
Seeking 2.6watts
Reading/Writing 2.3watts
Idle 0.9watts
Standby 0.25watts
Sleep 0.1watts

So it does look like the 5400 RPM uses more power by 10 to 15% vs current toshiba models, though it uses 50% more during startup. Now, because new and larger harddrive are in general more efficient than old ones, so you may not notice a difference.

If you can look at the hard drive in your Sony and get its exact model, a google search should give you the information on current draw and answer your question directly.

From my experience, no, the new 5400 RPM Hitachi drive does not seem to suck up more power than my old 4200 RPM IBM Travelstar. They last the same amount of time on my Inspiron 8200 (> 2 hrs) according to my experience.
