Without IAA, the hibernation progress bar speeds along nicely. (I'm running WinXP SP1) With IAA (either 2.2.2 or 2.3.0), the hibernation progress bar crawls along. I'd say it's 5x slower, so it's not something you'd have to time to notice. Uninstalling IAA solves the problem, so thankfully, it's not an issue that requires a reinstall of the OS to resolve. There is no difference in speed resuming from hibernation with and without IAA.

I'm trying to determine whether this is simply a characteristic of having IAA installed, or whether it's just my particular laptop configuration.
I sent my machine in for a battery charging issue and got it back, so I was able to check this out for you. With a new motherboard installed, I do see a great difference in hibernation time. It's not a 5x difference for me, more like 2x, which is still bad. Uninstalling the IAA solved the problem for me too.
I also do not gain any performance after installing the IAA now. I've tried it with 2 different BIOS versions and have had no improvement using the IAA, only slower hibernation.

Hey TheTechnique,
I haven't been able to get v2.3.0 installed either. I'm having the same issue as the user named Yuniverse in your forum. I'm following your directions as you typed them. Perhaps your .inf file only works for vpr machines.

Actually, the .inf was originally edited on a DELL laptop so it should work on all laptops...

You need to install V2.2.2. Then, download the V2.3.0 zip file on the infoarena.com forums, and MANUALLY update the three drivers under "ATAPI/IDE drivers". They will be "Intel Controller" "Primary Controller" and "Secondary Controller".

Then, if you want to have the V2.3.0 application, you need to download the other zip file and copy over the files in program files/intel application accelerator.

If you are having a specific problem, post on the forums there and I'm sure you will get an answer

Also, when updating drivers manually, please follow this procedure:

Here is the full list of steps for ANY manual driver install in Windows XP (I guess I probably should have posted this earlier):

"Update Driver"
"Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)"
"Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install."
"Have Disk..."
Then browse to the area where you unzipped the drivers and select the proper .inf.

Right, I did all these as described. I've read those vpr forums and am having the same issue as Yuniverse. XP responds that I have the latest already, and that the files in that selected directory are not newer than what I have installed already (2.2.2). I'm choosing advanced and setting the file directory. I understand your description, I've worked with driver updates for many OSes. XP just won't update v2.2.2 to your v2.3.0 files. Not sure why.

When you go to advanced settings, don't set a directory, the bottom dot says choose file to install and then you can install the other files. If you let it search for them, then it will never want to install those files.

XP WILL install the V2.3.0 files. I am running XP and it worked fine. You need to make sure and select "Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install" and then "Have disk" and then browse to the location. If you pick "don't search" it will let you install ANY driver you want. Can you try again using this method? YUniverse didn't do it correctly the first time and it works for him now I am pretty sure.

I see. Thanks, I'll try this again. I never chose the file specifically, just the installation directory. I'll update you here with any info when available.

I did the same thing as you first. Choosing the file specifically will make it work. Also, a restart was needed before all the 3 files showed updated versions.

2.3.0 and 2.2.2 seemed to behave the same for me. Hibernation still took noticeably longer, making me wonder how it was affecting performance overall. Let us know if you notice any differences.

Sorry to bump a dead thread to the top, but I just got my drive and wanted to update people.

I got the Hitachi, just like everyone else. This is a nice drive. It is very quiet, I can't even hear it. My old Toshiba 15GB would make occasional head seeking noise. This one I can't hear. Preliminary tests show the drive to be about twice as fast in most respects over my Toshiba drive which was just over a year old. This is a fast drive for a notebook computer. For testing, I used the quick and dirty Performance test that comes with Systemworks 2003. I know people don't really like this performance tester, but I have found it to be a pretty reliable way to compare two different computer, or when you upgrade the parts in your computer. I usually run it multiple times to make sure the test isn't a glitchy one. Every disk score was at least twice what the Toshiba did.

This is what upgrading a drive is about: bigger and faster

BTW, I sold my previous 15GB notebook drive for $40. There were a ton of potential buyers, so I might have been able to sell for more. Final cost after selling old drive is around $60 for a drive with 25GB more space.

This thread isn't dead. The deal keeps coming back.

I did get v 2.3.0 installed. It works, but I am unable to use the PC Mark benchmarking program to test the speed with any Application Accelerator installed. I'm using Dell's chipset, not Intel's 845MP chipset, which is a more recent release. I'm hesitant to use it since it might disable some of my laptop's functionality.

Hibernation does not get any faster with version 2.3.0 compared with 2.2.0. Hibernation is fastest without the App Accelerator installed. Standby works in all cases.

Dell raised price on this HD to $156 and corrected the cache size to 2MB
With current 20% off it is not that hot anymore...

googlegear also has a "IBM (Hitachi) Travelstar 40GNX 40GB ATA-5 2.5in 5400RPM Mobile Drive Refurbished"

For $85.99... But that's not REALLY HOT considering that a few days ago (after complaning, some people bought a brand new hitachi for that price.

I thought it was $107? Was this another thread or did I miss something in this one?

I too am looking for a deal on a 40 Gb notebook drive. I brought my Dell Inspiron 4000 with a 10 Gb drive a while back but I never upgraded it as planned. 10 Gb is pretty tight with a dual boot system!

Also, some people called in to claim for an mis-advertisment about the 16MB buffer. So what happened was that DELL gave various credits to people, some people got as much as $50 back some got none, but it was worth a shot. But now DELL has modified and corrected the error on their site.

Beware of googlegear. I bought a 30GB IBM drive from them last fall which was supposed to be new, but which came with a big orange sticker that said "Serviceable Used Part". Customer service wouldn't do squat, so I formatted it and used it anyway. So far so good, but I will not order from them again.

As always, YMMV.

I remember reading your post. Did you consider dealing with them through your credit card company? I'm sure the cc people would see your side of the story and the need for a full refund. I've dealt with them before (2 Celeron 566 CPUs back in the 566-850 Mhz overclocking, still in my main desktop!) but I'll be careful from now on.
