What part did you order 340-3965 or 340-3925?
I would call them and asked for the right drive or discount on this one.
They have 16MB cache in description and picture of HDD2171.

I ordered and received my drive today as well.
I got the Hitachi as well. Not sure what to do. The Hitachi has a better published PCMark2002 score, at least from what I saw on thebithead's I8200 FAQ. It's not as good as the IBM's Score, but it's higher than the Toshiba's.

I haven't heard anything positive or negative about Hitachi, so I don't know whether to consider their drives as good or bad.

After reading lots of posts on the Hitachi drive (DK23EB-40) at Dell's Community Support forum, I feel that I would have the Hitachi or IBM drive rather than the Toshiba. I feel that real world tests are more important than what specs may say. The fact that the Hitachi is quiet is a plus too. Didn't hear any complaining posts on the newer Hitachi drives, only old 4200 RPM drives.

Just got home to the package and it's not the Toshiba, it's the Hitachi DK23EB-40 (as others have stated).
Item number from the shipping slip is 0P588. :frown:

I wouldn't frown. I'd be kinda happy. I decided to keep the drive and did a clean install of XP on the drive.
Here are my outstanding results:

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?pcm=1124030

This was done without the Intel Application Accelerator. It's not loud at all, much quieter than my old 4200 RPM IBM TravelStar. When the fan kicks on at slow speed, there's no chance you can hear the drive. IMO, the fan and CD are the loudest components on my machine now.

Go Hitachi!

It's a shame that Dell isn't shipping what is advertised though. I'm going to wat until the Toshibas fall back down in price.

In my experience, hitachi drives use up more power then their specs states.

I had a Hitachi DK23DA-40F 40gig FDB 4200rpm drive, and I upgraded to a IBM 40gnx 40gig 5400rpm drive.

According to both specs, the IBM drive should use up more power and produce more heat. (about 10 to 15 percent)

but in my testing under the same circumstances, I always get about 20 to 30 minutes longer battery life with the IBM drive. (all else being the same).
This is on a Compaq EVO N600c laptop. Also the bottom of the machine runs really hot when using the hitachi drive, to the point where your hands will hurt if you touch it for more then 10 seconds. With the IBM drive, it is barely warm to the touch.

Performance wise, Sandra disk benchmark reports a 40% jump in performance.

I can feel a significant performance improvement. Windows and application start times are about 20% faster with the IBM.

I have not used the toshiba drive so I can't comment about that. But in the past, I preferred toshiba 4200rpm drives to IBM 4200rpm drives because they just felt faster to me (no real benchmarks done to back that up, just a personal feeling).

To make it clear to all, IBM sold their HDD diveision to Hitachi. This means that IBM = Hitachi. There is no differnece in their drives. If you Have the same model from both manufactures, they are exactly the same.

Yes the sale was pretty recent, which means everything they have on the market at this point was still designed and manufacturered by the respective companies. (i.e. IBM travelstar was designed by IBM not Hitachi) right now you will not find a IBM drive and a Hitachi drive that has the same design with a different name.

It will probably be another 6 months or more before you will find a IBM drive designed by hitachi and is identical to a drive with the hitachi name on it.

It takes months to even a few years before acquired companies are integrated into the acquiring company. I'm with thenew3, it'll take some time before Hitachi drives actually = IBM drives. It could happen that Hitachi decides that one of the manufacturing firms make their high end drives and the other makes lower end drives as well.

With all you guys buying new drives for your laptops, anybody want to find a good home for your old one? My son's laptop really needs something bigger than the 1.3 GB drive that's in it now, and I can't afford a new one. PM me if you're willing to let yours go cheap.

Just be careful replacing HD on the old laptops - I had a lot of trouble years ago with compaq laptops - BIOS and IDE controllers not capable to handle larger drives.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. Although it's iffy whether I could use a 20 or 40 GB drive in this old machine, I think I'm fairly safe with one of those 4 GB drives from Souka (thanks, guy!). My brother's got a couple of 3-1/2" adapters expressly for the purpose of cloning notebook drives, so even if the new drive won't go, the old one will still be viable.

So what brand do you finally get? All hitachi? Did anybody installed it, and how's the result? Is it really fast?

I bought this drive on the 20th under small business.. no shipping, but they charged
me 6$ tax. making the order 127$..

Now you can order the drive on home side and the drive cost 121$ no shipping, no tax.

That sucks.. I also want to return it since its not the right drive (its the hitachi)
and would like to re-order it again, but would prob get the same drive again..
(would be nice to save 7$ also)

I got a Hitachi too. Installed it yesterday and everything was fine. Much quieter than my old drive, which was also a Hitachi (12GB, 4200RPM.) That old drive was making click/clunk noises that drove me crazy first, but I just got used to it later on I guess. The new drive is much better (knock on wood.)

There is a very noticeable speed increase.
