http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo...Hz Base clock - Up to 4.4GHz Turbo&txt=Source

Originally speculated, at most, an upgraded version of the clock +100 MHz, but it seems that the top Core i7-4790K is not so simple, basic clock will be increased to 4GHz, Turbo Boost to reach 4.4GHz, than the original Core 3.5/3.9 i7-4770K's GHz up to 500MHz, the magnitude is not small, it seems to put a better TIM thermal media and new packaging materials, really solved the problem of poor heat earlier, it seems really easy on the 5GHz. As for Core i5-4690K is only to enhance the 100MHz only. Another part of both the TDP 88W, 84W per cent more than the original number.

In short: Z97 has different power delivery which seems to have addressed some of the temp issues, rumors indicate the ES Devi's Canyon is overclocking to 5ghz for many TW/Chinese guys near the supply chain easily. Also, many Z97 motherboard reviews seem to indicate that even with higher over-voltage, that temps even on existing 4770k parts are the same or better (mind you, this is with 1.35V+ which was unthinkable on Z87). Power delivery is definitely improved on the Z97 platform, and the 4790K seems to have additional improvements as well.

As usual, rumor, take with a grain of salt. Interesting if true though - might be my next upgrade. Pentium-K unlocked SKUs also supposedly coming. If these dual core Pentium SKUs replace existing parts at the same prices - hoo boy. Can't wait to OC one of those suckers for my HTPC.

Interesting, and good news if the clocks are really true and the price stays the same as the K skus now.

However, if a simple redesign like this makes so much difference, I suspect there will also be a lot of backlash because they cheaped out on the rest of the line.

This will be a nice performance boost, more than a 10% they give us from a new generation

Why is the i5 so much slower with the same TDP? Does anyone think it will overclock as well, especially without the hyperthreading?

Yup! Intel is pretty crazy for chasing performance per watt with the resulting ultrabook and macbook market and getting all of those design wins thanks to performance per watt. And of course there's all of the corporate and data center sales which of course also, oddly enough, rely on performance per watt. Gee. I wonder why intel designs their architecture around performance per watt. One can only wonder when intel completely dominates those segments with an 80%+ market share.

Intel only designs one architecture across the board for all products be it desktop, server, etc etc etc and all of those can either be designed for efficiency or they can be designed for all out IPC. Going with the latter route would not be sustainable 10-20 years from now, if efficiency isn't in line.

Anyway, It is what it is. The silicon metrics for design have changed over the past few years. Performance per watt of course lends itself to the vast majority of sales which would include ultrabooks, macbooks, corporate, server and data center sales, of course intel completely dominates there because they have good performance per watt. 15-20 years ago, this did not matter, only all out performance mattered. Computing was obviously different 20 years when desktop was by far the dominant computing device. 15-20 years ago you walked into a Best Buy and saw aisles upon aisles of desktops. Now everyone buys portable computers such as their favorite ultrabook, chromebook or macbook. Portable computing is the preferred form of computing, therefore intel had to change their design metrics.

I have a slight feeling you're well aware of this though. Now, as a desktop user it isn't ideal. Far from it, I would agree with that. But it is what it is. The performance metrics for silicon design are forever changed thanks to computing changing so radically over the past 5 years or so. It sucks but, hey, intel is still making great chips for the desktop. I certainly would prefer 40% jumps in all out performance, PPW be damned, but that just isn't happening. Anyway.............. DC sounds interesting, I certainly hope the rumors are true.

Intel claims that these chips were re-engineered for performance and OCing, so it is highly unlikely that Devils Island only nets a 100mhz speed bump.

They'd be creating a rod for their own back, as what would be the selling points of Broadwell & Skylake, if Intel bumps Haswell's default speed up to 4Ghz.

If this is true than kudos to intel! 10% perf. boost from mere refresh is massive bump.

Broadwell refresh? Well since clockspeeds have been a standstill, i'd have to think if Haswell can do it, that broadwell and skylake could do it as well on the desktop. This is all a long time away though.

I guess my main question is that there is a 30$ difference between current K and non-K SKUs. So if this rumor is true, would that still apply? Or would it cost more? I'm really curious to find out more, guess we'll know in 3 weeks or so.

It's also confirmed that DC and Broadwell will only work on Z97. Or at least, DC will only work on Z97 because of different power delivery methods which is not supported with Z87. Guess i'll be needing to sell a Z87 board soon if DC lives up to the hype.

Wow, didn't see that coming. +500MHz bump is very impressive for a ''Refresh'', ~14.2% higher base clock compared to i7-4770K. Thats almost what you'd expect from an Intel tock design these days.
Hopefully they also reach higher OCs @ air/water than regular Haswell too.

Haswell's IPC + SB-like OC potential (or better)? Finally a worthy successor to some older Intel quads if true.

If the i5 has the same tunning under the hood, even without having the same clock bump at stock, would be interesting as a proper SB/IB replacement.

???

All i said was that raising 500MHz the base and Turbo frequency will give us more performance than a new gen would have, if we take what happened the last three gens.

So i dont really know why you started all that talking about performance per watt and ultrabooks etc

I don't know if they are bumping it that high, but even if they did, I don't see how Broadwell-K would be cannibalized. They are not even the same process.

Even if Broadwell-K doesnt improve CPU performance at all it will still have the massive Gen 8 GT3e iGPU as a selling point. As long as they keep prices similar I think they should be fine.

I'm really looking forward to that Pentium-K.

.......but it needs to run on a cheaper platform to be more accessible.

If Intel will not allow overclocking on H81 ( and I don't think they ever will), then bring on the unlocked BGA Pentium K SOCs.

Maybe Skylake will be a significantly wider/higher IPC cpu core design? (beating even a 4.0 Ghz/4.4 Ghz turbo Haswell refresh)

Well, lets wait to see if these are the real numbers. I tend to be suspicious also that the slide is fake, especially since the i5 is so much slower clocked. Either that or they are going to jack up the price of the i7 proportionately more than the i5.

I was almost excited until I realised that is basically what the chips were happily doing before they went and ripped out the metal TIM material and replaced it with baby milk. So all they have done is return the CPU clock speed peak back to where it was with Sandy Bridge except now they are calling it special and presumably charging more for it?! When I am getting reamed I at least intend to call it that.

Keep in mind that SB was made on a 32nm planar process, which is much different from Haswell's 22nm Tri-Gate process.

I agree with your point, but if those clocks are correct on the 4790 it is more than 10% faster than stock on any previous intel cpu. Lets see though, like I said, if those numbers are really accurate and what the price is. I am thinking if those clocks are correct, it might be a highly binned chip and they could up the price considerably.
