Update Sept 16th. New $30 rebate offer = $39.99 AR + shipping, limit 3.
Using one of these in a budget gaming rig, overkill for a Phenom X6 @4.1 GHz + GTX460.

Update Aug 15th. $39.99 AR + shipping. Rebate good till 8/31.
Update Aug 12th, $30 AR for 850W 80+ Silver semi-modular. FREE SHIPPING TODAY.
Update Aug 5th, new rebate for August. 850W still $40 AR + ship. No new 550W rebate so far. Amex card rebate payment arrived today (HEC 550W deal). Mailed submission July 18th, standard service level.

There are also some case combo deals on offer (check the product pages).

850 Watt PSU, partially modular, now 39.99 after a $30 rebate. Said to be a less pretty version of the Cougar SX850 PSU (also by HEC). It has been at $39.99 AR a few times and was $30 AR on 8/12.

550 Watt PSU [DEAD] was $9.99 after a $15 rebate, plus shipping (~$6.60/1 & $10.80/3). Bought 3 for about $12.50 AR per unit (5% cashback CC & a postage stamp).
HEC Group 550W Power Supply - 80+ Bronze, 120mm Fan, Cable Management (None! Likely a copy/paste error from the 850W specs). OEM (PART: SYX-806946OH) (Model: HEC-550TB).

Hardware Secrets did a favorable review of a similar rebadged HEC-550TB-2WX: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/printpage/ADATA-BN-550-Power-Supply-Review/1268. Stress testing at 48c to the limit, until ripple went wild, they pulled 695 watts out of it.

Smart Fan Control Function Keeps Noise Level Under 22dBA
Protection Functions: OVP (Over-Voltage Protection), UVP (Under-Voltage Protection), OCP (Over-Current Protection), SCP (Short-Circuit Protection)

Happy to get 3 of the HEC 350 Watt 80+ PSU's (July 4th special). Bought three 550's. Bought an 850W on 8/12 when they had free shipping.

July 17 Update, received the 550's. They look well made. Through the grill the PCB appears to have the same internals as pictured in the hardwaresecrets.com review (quality filter stage: X & Y caps, MOV's etc.). One sample, out of the four, has a faint fan ticking sound, which disappears if the unit is inverted. Don't see anything rubbing. The remaining units are very quiet.
Label specs: +12 V1 28A, +12 V2 20A (480W combined), +3.3 V 24A, +5 V 15A (120W combined), -12 V 0.3A, +5 VSB 3.0A. Total Output 550W. Voltages spot on (multimeter).
Cables: 18" long to the first connector, heavy 16 AWG wiring to 4+4 cpu power & 3.3V lines, 18 AWG to peripherals. 4x SATA Connector, 2x PCI-E Connector (6pin), 20 + 4 Mobo & 4 + 4 Mobo, 6x Molex Connector, 1x Floppy Drive Connector (this gets 22 AWG wiring).

Pretty good deal. HEC is huge in the OEM market.. I would generally trust them. Someone chime in if im way off here.

I think there is a huge amount of FUD among enthusiasts regarding PSUs.

The "bad" PSUs that you shouldn't use are:
- Ones that have labels which lie about actual output. You shouldn't support companies like this.
- Ones that are unable to meet ATX spec for voltage and ripple. This can kill components.

If a PSU meets ATX specs and puts out every watt listed on the label, why shouldn't you "trust" it? No, this will not have the "quality" of a PSU costing 20x the $10. However, that doesn't mean it isn't "trustworthy."

I want to point out something... BITD the "go to" PSU for those on a budget was the Thermaltake TR2-430. This was prior to the endless hot deals on the Antec Earthwatts and NEO ECO, and of course way before the Corsair CX430. That Thermaltake? Yup, made by HEC.

At least this 550w ps has a power switch, unlike the 350w HEC unit recently on sale.

Tigerdirect + rebates = absolutely not.

Too bad, that's not a bad deal on power supplies.

Years ago this would have been /truth. Or in these days of 140 characters, #truth. However, after two lawsuits (that I know of), Tiger Direct has become really good about rebates. :whiste: Even though they didn't "lose" the lawsuits, I'm sure their attorneys weren't cheap.

Actually, nowadays, I find their rebate process better using internet filing. For an extra $1 you can actually get expedited processing as soon as your signed forms and documents are received. Anyways, I bit on the 550W for a spare. at less than $10 it's well worth trying.

Nope. At $10 after rebate, you are better off just buying a spare.

Instead of paying for SquareTrade, just add that to the purchase price and use the money for a better PSU.

Blah... I can't even find the 850w model on the manufacturer's website. I'm guessing it's a discontinued model or something?

I need to know the dimensions of it to see if it would physically fit in one of my machine.

Dimension (L*W*H) mm 180 x 150 x 86 per Cougar (HEC).
7.09" x 5.91" x 3.39" per Newegg.
Specs for the COUGAR SX850 (discontinued, said to be the twin of this unit, both by HEC)
http://www.cougar-world.com/products/discontinued/cougar_sx.html
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16817553006

I just bought one. Curious to see if it has the 105c Japanese capacitors of the Cougar SX850.

HEC was not my go-to company for PSU's. They make some good stuff, and have made some not so good stuff. These newer 80+ designs all seem to be decent. And the TD rebates are crazy fast now, standard service. Got the last rebate in 3 weeks, before the CC bill was due.

I can confirm that TD's rebates are ridiculously fast. I got mine in 2 weeks.

It may not be a Seasonic, but I'd venture to guess that the 850W is well worth $30.

Funny what a couple of lawsuits can do. :awe:

I mailed my 350W rebate on 7/15 and 550W rebate on 7/22. Received both on 8/8, thus 17 days for the 550W rebate and 24 days on the 350W rebate. My guess is that they get mailed out in batches.

HEC is decent for PSU's... I'm not nearly as worried about that.

Size wise, it hits the upper limit and won't work for me. Oh well.

I nabbed up one too. My Seasonic built NZXT is too loud at times. I will keep it as a backup.
