Hi

I was building my PC today and am using a Xigmatek S1283 cooler on a Q6600 with AS5. I used the normal push pins and applied AS5. But while attaching the power cables, the cooler became loose so obv was not fitted properly. Now I noticed 2 of the pus pins ends are bent apart a bit. So will it not fit properly now and shall I just get a retenton kit? If they will fit then if I re attach the heatsink tommorow then will I need to clean off the AS5 and reapply?
thanks

ok
with bolt through kits. How do ya make sure you dont short circuit the motherboard as the metal backplate makes contact with the motherboard?

It is all thought out for you. The kit covers that problem, and is worth every penny. SidewinderPC also ships USPS first class. On the last two, shipping was only $2.xx.

Nothing against the cleaner, but AS5 wipes off easily w/o it. You won't regret the bolt kit .

I don't think I've ever properly applied or properly removed any thermal paste. I use whatever is handy to wipe it off...usually toilet paper!

Push pins don't suck. People who fail to learn how they work first before installing them suck. I've removed my ThermalTake V1 many, many times as I transistioned from my B3 Q6600, to G0 Q6600 on a 650i board to then a 680i board and then upgrading again to a QX6850. Later took that heatsink to a Asus P5Q-C. And now have been using it fine with my Asus P6T Deluxe with my i7 920 running at 3.9GHz with full load temps in the low 70s.

As for cleaning off the thermal paste, I've only reapplied the paste like 4 or 5 times out of the 15 or so reinstalls of the various CPUs and boards.

Re: push pins. I think it depends on the quality of the heatsink. I too have a thermaltake v1 and i've removed it and put it back on countless times and never had a problem. On the other hand every stock heatsink i've used the pins eventually broke. Honestly though I think my favorite mounting system so far is my sunbeam core contact. The mounting bracket uses a push pin system while the heatsink attaches to the mounting unit with a secure easy to operate clip. I'm more annoyed if I have to pull my motherboard to upgrade my cooling solution. Call me lazy I just hate computer downtime.

well the ones on the xigmatek s1283 are quite bad. They bent after one install, now Im not sure if I applied too much force but otherwise it would not click in place. I prefer the old AMD Athalon heatsink installs.

I was able to swap chips no problem with the bolt kit. The feet fit up in the holes, and hold it in place when un-bolted. You can also fold a small piece of cardboard and place behind the mobo/backplate to really keep it in place (if worried).

The people that make AS5 actually say isopropyl alcohol is just as good as any specially made TIM cleaner...
