Cooler/CPU noise

It started today, a kind of vibrating noise that I don't know where it's coming from. I tried spinning the fan with the power off but it didn't seem to rub anywhere. I also tried pushing the cooler screws in tighter but that didn't seem to help either.

I checked the CPU temperature with HWMonitor and it shows 36-43 degrees celsius.

What do I do next?

My processor is an Intel i5 4670k with a stock cooler, it's been about two years since I bought it.

Did it spin freely when you tested it? Bearings could be failing.

Yeah I posted this accidentally first on the CPUs forum.

I did spin the fan with the power off and it didn't seem to touch anywhere. It could be that the power of the spin is throwing the fan off it's axis and cause contact with other parts.

Anyway, I'm buying a new cooler. An after-market fan should do nicely, since I have no OCing plans for now.

You can safely stop the fan while it's spinning to verify. New cooler is def. best though. My stock Haswell cooler has started to whine pretty good when I do a lot of encoding.

Seems like the problem was with the PSU fan, and not the processor fan. CPU fan revolves freely even when testing it. PSU fans can make a lot of noise as I found out searching the youtube.

Best bet is to stop each fan with your finger or the eraser-end of a pencil to see if you can isolate the noise before replacing anything.
