I need help picking out my power supply because i live in uruguay so most brands dont even know where it is.

I'm between the coolermaster extreme 500w 70% eff and dual 12v rails and maybe an antec truepower trio 430w, but this antec costs me here 40U$S more than the cooler master making me hesitate if they're worthy.

What do u think?

The cool thing about forums is you discuss things in public so other people can learn from them. Private messages are good for things that need to be discussed privately.

You get what you pay for. Although most Cooler Master PSU's are good, the eXtreme Power is rated at peak and at 25°C. Compare that to the Antec which is rated at continuous and at 50°C and you're actually looking at a significantly more capable power supply.

If a PSU is rated at 25°C, that means it's rated to put out it's advertised power at 25°C.. aka "room temperature".

Beyond that the PSU is less likely to put out as much continuous power.

Operating temperature of a PC is generally 40°C, not 25°C. So the likelihood that this PSU is going to put out it's advertised wattage once it's installed inside a computer is slim to none.

A PSU may only be able to product 70% or so of it's rated power when going from 25 to 40°C, so expect a 400W PSU to only do under 300W continuous.

He's saying that some PSU's can put out 500w at 40-50c, the usual operating temperature of a PSU. Other PSU's, that say 500w, can only put out 500w at 25c, but when it becomes warmer, the PSU becomes less powerfull, and can only put out 400w ? Do you understand ?

As for the antec's, can't you get a antec earthwatts 430/500w instead ? I think the basiq is a decent PSU, but I would avoid the smartpower. The real power pro 'might' be a decent unit, but wait for someone else to confirm it.

Right. It's NOT the same. Operating temperature means it can just operate within that range. May be 100% of it's capability. May be 50%. Who knows?

thanks marc and jonny, i get the thing with the temps now. I can get the earthwatts, but HERE it costs me $125, and if i could pay that i'd get the truepower trio 550w with the 12cm fan... the thing is that i dont know if i could get 125 to spend in a psu... it costs almost 2 times the cm realpower 450... what do u think about the cm real power 450 jonny? u said most of the cm were good...

i promise i wont ask another question after this one =)

The Real Powers are better, but the 450W is only rated at 30°C.

Is the selection in Uraguay that poor? There are no other choices other than Antec and Cooler Master? I mean, with the Antec you do get what you pay for (a better PSU) but there has to be a door #3, no?
