I got the latest sale flyer from SVC.
They had some Cooler Master fans free after rebate.
I was specifically looking at this fan.
It's supposed to be quiet (16.5 dBA in "silent" mode) but will also blow some air (110CFM in high performance mode).
I'm not sure what they mean by "automatic temperature speed controller", but it also states there's a "manual speed control".
Thoughts on this?
Thanks.

From my experience, CM had always been over quoted their fans performance. Usually, what they got right was actually their fans' audible volume but as far as the fans performance, you are looking at around 25% to 30% less than what they quoted. Even that was still pretty good. If you read the rebate carefully, it is only valid when you buy the fan with the CM Stacker but 5 bucks is not a bad price for high speed 120mm case fan.

What they mean by "automatic temperature speed controller" is that in some fans, they have a temp sensor that connects to a variable speed controller.

Do not expect much of this system because it really depending on a wire looping on a heat producing area and it has to be installed at the correct way. However, the correct way was never really instructed by CM.

Anyway, any type of heat signature recognized by the loop wire will send signal to the speed controller to increase the fan speed and anything less than that will send the fan into the lowest speed (usually 800rpm@5V; never 0rpm@0V).

In practice, this sensor type of speed controller never really works because of the placement of the sensor. Regardless how you put the sensor, it will never increase the fan speed like it supposed to thus to me, the whole concept is a joke.

Basically, "manual speed controller" is just that: manual fan speed control. You would actually need a separate twist knob potentiometer adjust your fan speed.

Manual Speed Control is better and worst at the same time. On most of the fan speed controller, they will allow you to run at 0rpm@0V aka fan off. If you use the fan controller just for the case only, that is okay. However, if you use the manual controller for the CPU fan as well, that would smell trouble because you will not cool anything without a working fan so that if you turn off the fan, guess what? You will eventually burn your CPU.

I hope that helps.

Hey Tull,

Couldn't find any reviews on the web, but Newegg carries the black and the LED versions and both are 5 egg with a few comments on each - lots o' pics too. My honkin' 38mm thick Sanyo Denki puts out the kind of air that the CM claims. Hard to do with a 25mm fan - probably noisy at that rate but it's the quality of the noise, not just the level. And the noise will decrease by using the manual control which can be put in a 3" bay or on a PCI slot plate.

Most fan temp controls are just a thermistor that sticks up in the air stream on the exhaust side of the fan (called a "local" sensor), but I don't see it on the fan itself (but the label side is the exhaust side and that was the smallest pic on the Egg - the one you need to be the biggest) but I don't think it's local, so it must be remote, IOW on a wire so you can place it near or on the item whose temp you want to use to control the fan.

If you get one, report back.

I've used the LED versions of the Cooler Master fans in my Stacker-832 system and have been very pleased with them.

PH42,
Probably NOT like the one we're discussing here. The 1200 rpm ones are nice and quiet. The one Tull is mulling is twice the rpm and 2.5 times the CFM with both thermal and manual controls in the box. The Egg sells 'em for $20. each - eek!

It's very difficult for a 25mm profile fan to perform like a 38mm fan. 120 x 38mm Panaflo is big and heavy (86 CFM @ 2100 rpm with 36 dBA). This unit runs well from about 700 rpm (ultra quiet) to 2100 rpm if connected to the Abit IP35-E's CPU or SYSTEM fan header. Very strong static pressure/air flow under full load with reasonable noise level.

In summary, I doubt that the CM 120 x 25mm can put out 110 CFM @ 2500 rpm with 38 dBA.

Yup, SR, hard to do. I have an old NMB (120x25 dual ball) here than can do nearly 100 CFM and it is a screamer at full cry and sucks 3/4 of an Amp. But from the buyer comments re. the black and LED ones on the Egg, CM might have done it. I'll have three coming my way shortly and I'll definitely report on them.
