Is thisthe same coolermaster that everyone is raving about? it's $80 free shipping on zip...

I'm running a fairly simple machine, oc 8400, 8800gt (no dual cards), a few hard drives and that's about it. I know it's overkill but a good 500w is going for this. any reason not to get this one? Is it going to use more electricity?

Wow, that's another HOT DEAL coming right up Jump on it asap, you will have a overkill PSU, but it will last you for years, especially since it won't ever run above 40% of it's capacity. Stability, ripple and general performance wise, I don't think there are cheaper units that are better, especially not at 750w.

I just got mine this morning. This thing is silent, I cannot hear the fan. I know it is a little overkill for my system but if I decide to go bigger case and more compnents i got the PS to handle it.

Basically, no.

The components downstream from the PSU will determine the power draw from the PSU. To get the actual power from the wall, you just need to divide that by the PSU efficiency. The capacity of the PSU will not directly determine how much power it draws from the wall. Of course, the PSU efficiency varies with load and usually peaks near the middle (e.g. 40-60%), The 80Plus certification that this PSU has means that it has to be at least 80% efficient at 20%, 50%, and 100% of its capacity and most units will hover between 80-85% efficiency in that 20-100% load range. This basically means that using less than about 25% of the stated capacity of your PSU will often give you a bit lower efficiency, but not usually by a lot. And with your system you should have no trouble getting hitting a good efficiency on this unit considering your 8800GT alone will take 15% (111W) at idle. Here's an example of efficiency curves that includes the CM 850.
