I have read somewhere that the 1.4 GHz T-bird Runs very hot, are the XPs running cooler?
What CPU could you recommend for a "silent system" with same performance as a 1.4 GHz T-bird (and price range)?

You are correct; Tbird temps are very high. The following chart was taken from SandPile.org. These are figures without O/Cing. The first figure is regular load and the one after the slash (/) is under heavy load and is rated in Watts.

1.0 Tbird 49/54
1.2 Tbird 59/66
1.4 tbird 65/72
XP 1600 @ 1.4 56.3/62.8
XP 2000 @1.667 62.5/70.0

As you can see, the 1.4 Tbird has the highest temp. I would suggest purchasing a XP 1600 or XP 1700. The XP 1600 is doing the same amount of work as a 1.4 Tbird running @ 1.6. True the XPs are a little higher, but are really worth it. I would not recomend higher than a XP1700 as they are really not as cost effecent. Am now running a XP 1600, but will change to a PAL 8045 HS next week. Summer is coming on and my CPU temps are rising.

good luck , Gene

Gene,

Do you know if these temps were recorded in a fully enclosed system? If so, then my temps are right in line with those. However, anytime someone posts a message here with temps even CLOSE to those, people say that they are way too high. I guess I'm a little confused at what's acceptable by AMD's standards.

AMD's website says anything below 90 Tbird and 95 XP are acceptable(meaning they won't kill the core). 50's and 60's are what alot of people get who haven't increased airflow I believe so it should be just fine. I don't know if it's my motherboard lieing to me but my Tbird 1.33 is running at 40/46 and this is with a stock hs and fan from hp. I'll be buyin a real therm. soon so i'll be able to post actual numbers instead of sounding like I have a decent cooling system running.

I would recommend a 1400 XP. It's about the cheapest XP and is much cooler than the T-birds. For quiet cooling, go for an Alpha 8045 with a quiet Panaflow 80 mm fan or even a quiet 60 mm (I've successfully used a 8045 with a thin 60mm fan on a Duron 950 that had limited clearance above the heatsink).

KRS62 -- Please read my reply again. The numbers were in WATTS not temps!! Watts are a unit of energy consumed (volts x amps = watts).

However # of watts does correlate to heat that must be vented. Twice the number watts would be twice the heat. If you want the lowest price The XP 1400 would run @ 1.2 and probably use lower watts than the Tbird 1.0. You really can't tell the difference between CPU speed unless you use a program to monotor.

With rooms temps in the high 60s; I get 36/42 C. With summer heat, rooms temps are in high 70s. Readings are now 40/45 C. This is with case open using retail XP1600 HS and using a Delta fan running at 6K rather than 7K. Put a 5 ohm resister is 12 volt line to drop voltage.

These are acceptable figures, but I will get PAL8045 HS and YSTech fan. This fan has variable resistor so that you can "dial" in combination of heat and noise that is acceptable to you.
