Coolest *Vintage* Game Console

Well, I was rummaging through the hot deals forum, and came across a thread that linked to where you could buy a neat NES-alternative top loading system on the cheap. That got me to wondering, "I wonder what's on eBay?"

To my surprise, I found a good quantity of most of the major vintage consoles out there, and 15 minutes later I found myself really craving my old Atari 2600 in my attic.

Fast forward 45 minutes from then, and here I am still thinking about old gaming goodness. However, the original consoles (Early 80s, late 70s) were a bit before my time, so I wanted to hear a bit about them from those that personally played them, and hence this thread(and poll). I tried to keep the poll restricted to systems >=20 years old, with the exception of the Sega Master system(because that thing was just so damned cool).

Retro trip everybody!

Let me see if I can add the Commodore.

*Edit*

What, no pre-NES'ers?

Vectrex!

It had a built in black and white vector based display with like a 5:3 display (taller than wide) and used color overlays. It had analog joystics plus 4 buttons on each controller. Ive still got mine.. plus a c-64 with 1541 drives.. archon rules

Man, back in the day all of my friends had an atari 2600 and I'd go over to their house to play. My family was too poor at the time to buy one for me, or maybe I didn't really care about it that much But anyhow, when the NES first came out, my mom bought me one of those to give to me for christmas. It was promptly stolen from a house break-in while we were on vacation right before christmas (I never got to play it).

Since she didn't want to buy another expensive NES, I got a colecovision. That was pretty darn cool and much better than the 2600 atari's. I spent a lot of time on the colecovision. I remember playing frogger on it, and had some cabbage-patch kid game or something like that.

I eventually did get a NES, then SNES, then computer (where my console playing ended for a good 8 years), then xbox, then ps2

Neo Geo of course!

Hey, where is that selection on the poll? And what about Turbo Graphix 16 and 3DO?

Turbografx 16 came out in '88/'89 depending on the model, which is why I didn't include it, but my cousin did have one of those, and I must admit it was a pretty good system! I used to love playing Bonk's adventure everytime I went over to his place. That was a wild game for the time.

I do faintly remember the 3DO, and how it had some really sweet looking games for it. I don't remember the system doing very well though. Was it too expensive upon launch or something?

Also, didn't Phillips have something called the CDTV or CD-something? I remember seeing it on display at Best Buy around the time Playstation came out if memory serves me correct.

*Edit*
Vectrex ('82) added to poll. Sorry for leaving it out, I didn't think anyone had one.

Avalon deserves to be shot.

The best classic console was the first 32-bit console on the market.

The Amiga CD-32.

Last gen isn't "vintage", and neither is anything from the early 90s (SNES, SEGA Genesis).

I have NES, SNES, SEGA Genesis and SEGA CD emulators and games on my computer

I played those when I was growing up, and PS1 as a teenager (I have a PS2 that can play my old PS2 games already so don't need an emulator). Man, those old consoles were the coolest things. I don't think I can enjoy consoles that I didn't play as a kid though. I have fun because of the nostalgia factor, mostly. The old midi music cracks me up though

Genesis was at least 2 generations ago and in about 3 months it will be 3 generations ago. That should make it vintage. Anything with a cartridge is vintage to me excluding handhelds.

XBOX
PS2
GAMECUBE

Last Gen
Dreamcast
Nintendo 64
PS1

Astrosmash was my favorite. I could play forever.

Baseball was really good. "Yer Out" in that sythesized voice it did.

Yeah all their sports games were really good. Lots of other great titles too. I also had the voice synthesizer for games like B-17 Bomber "Bandits 12 o'clock!"

Vectrex, simply because it seemed by far the most different that any other console out. I <3 those wireframe-like graphics.

I remember vectrex had those plastic screen overlays which gave it fake color. Was still cool.

Vectrex = Vector Graphics

Anyone remember those minature arcade cabinet version of PacMan, Donkey Kong, and Frogger? Not the coctail cabinets but the little 12" ones.

Its funny that all this is coming up while I am in the middle of building a sit down racing cabinet. I should have it done in a couple days. So far I build the base and sides. I still need a car seat. Putting in a 19" monitor until I can measure the finished cabinet to determine if a 27 or 32" Tv will fit.
