Can't cool my 2 gtx 295's when running them in SLi together.

I've got a full tower (Coolermaster HAF 932, lots of big fans)
Asus P6T mobo
bunch of other crap

The 295's temp just skyrockets when gaming up to 160F or something. Me just surfing the net and they are between 135-144F right now.

All fans are running at 100%
I can't adjust the fan speed on the 295's in nTune for some reason....

Its all brand new and dust free, elevated

I've searched

I've looked at PCI slot coolers but dont think they would help much if you look at the geometry of the EVGA GTX 295's

Dont see any VGA coolers that i think are compatible. Afraid I'll have to take apart my videocard to install one anyways

I'm basically hoping someone else out there is running this and has already solved this issue.

Thank You.

160F is fine. That's 72C. Well within specification. They can go upwards of 90C. My GTX260 goes up to 80C under gaming load. You can use eVGA Precision (from evga.com) to adjust the fans.

Really, the only other only cooling available is to watercool (easily done in the HAF, but it's expensive).

My single 295 maxes out at 92c @100% fan under occt... More typically ~80c in crysis and heavy gaming with lower fan speeds. When you said 160f I was concerned but if that's 72c you got some real nice cool cards there. Congratulations.

well maybe i should just describe the issue i'm having then.

About 15 minutes into gaming i get artifacting and "the display driver stops responding" so basically the game crashes.

GPU's CAN HANDLE OVER 100C, they're not like CPUs! i've had my 8800gt over 100C for hours at a time and its still fine!

what psu are u running?

with your gear at least a real good quality 1kw is required.

Ikonik 1200 PS <-- what is that?

maybe a GPU defect. if reinstalling te drivers dont fix your problem, and your temps are under 120C. It should be a GPU hardware problem.

You mean something like 105C. I would be extremely worried for anything around 100C.

i've had my 8800gt as well as my old x1900xt up to about 120c, i was gaming and forgot to manually ramp up the fan from 29%.

both video cards did not artifact, nor were there any problems with it in the long run. i sold that x1900xt when i got my 8800gt and i'm still using my current 8800gt

I've tried each 295 alone and i dont get the error. all controllable fans are at 100%. the driver that stops responding is "nvlddmkm". I uninstalled all the drivers and reinstalled them and i'm still having the issue. I had this issue with my last computer too. it had a x1950.

sounds like a PSU problem then.

The second card is maxing your PSU out, so you get errors when you load both up.

even if they did, you're not anywhere close to needing more than 1200W.

but just because you have "enough watts" does not mean you have a quality psu, nor does it mean your psu is in perfect working condition.

if your system was using 1200W, that is about the same as a toaster oven. so your computer would literally be trying to cool a toaster oven's worth of components -- you would notice the heat.

The Ikonik power supply came highly recommended from someone who builds and services custom computers 40+ hours a week for a living. In fact, he recommended a lesser one and I asked him what he thought was the highest quality power supply I can get and thats the one i have.

It will run SLI all day on the desktop or internet surfing no problem.
It will play C&C Red Alert 3 all day with no problems
Unreal Tournament 3 - sometimes all day, sometimes 20 minute intervals between crash & recovery
Crysis Warhead - 5 minutes, usually a hard crash needs rebooted
FarCry 2 - 10 minutes sometimes hard crash sometimes not.

To give you an idea of the load on the PSU
computer has all things listed in my signature +
3 8in fans
1 ~4in fan
1 80mm fan on CPU
backlit keyboard with LED
USB corded mouse
Xbox 360 controller (seems to take quite a bit of juice for a controller, if you have any info on a peak wattage usage number for this controller let me know)

Thank you for your interest

Have you tried updating your board's BIOS? Sounds like an SLI issue more than anything else, specifically Quad-SLI. Its not uncommon for BIOS updates to address issues with specific cards, or SLI/CF. Also, try maybe PEG #1 and #3 or PEG #2 and #3 to see if it is potentially a mobo/SLI issue. I know its not desirable long-term due to the x4 in slot #3, its just to troubleshoot any potential BIOS or board incompatibility.

yeah its true, but in cases like that, the computer would bosd entirely.

This is kinda what made me think its a bad psu:

if you notice he's crashing a lot faster on the multi gpu supported programs which would load his gpu up to the max.

He pulls 1 gpu, and he's in heaven... hey OP, take this question to the PSU thread and post there, and see what our PSU experts say.
