Cooling a car without air conditioning?

Yow, I would need to replace the condenser, compressor, and the evaporator, plus a bunch of hoses and belts - way more than the old minivan is worth. And it's not in the budget to get another car.

So, any suggestions for keeping the car cool? Parking in the shade, keeping the sunshade in, lots of water.

I can't be the only person on ATOT driving a vehicle without AC!

Your car *may* have these things called windows. They generally open. Open them. Drive.

And what in the hell happened that would require to to replace your ENTIRE A/C system?! Put R-134a in a R-12 system or something?

My A/C doesn't work either. I roll down the windows, and deal with the messy hair and lower gas mileage.

When parking, leave your windows cracked so your car doesn't become an oven in the sun. It'll still be scorchingly hot when you get in, but at least it's vented a little. Also try those windshield blinders that keep the sun out.

Yep, the R-134a/R12 thing. It was my ex-husband's car, and turns out he did that when the AC needed charging a while back. He bought some kit off ebay. Bad idea.

The good news is the rest of the car is fine.

Thanks to all for the tip about "windows". I'm trying to think of some clever joke about windows not being installed. . . Anyway, opening the windows doesn't do much when sitting in traffic (NJ). Except to make it easier to yell at people.

I may try gluing a battery-operated fan to the dash.

That's important when driving in NJ.

Your car should already have a fan.

A window unit is far too small in capacity to cool down the cabin of a motorcar. 48-60 mbh (4-5 TONS) of cooling capacity is the norm. (I know the pic was a redneck type joke but some believe it. )

A window unit can cool a good sized room, but it can't cool a car?

A car interior is like a greenhouse. Tremendous heat load. If the car was parked in the shade there would be no problem.

That's campers for you. Works great when parked at night for sleeping.

Make sure no outside air flows in through the vents. It's always warmer than window air and it's no fun having hot air blow over you.

Park in the shade wherever possible. Makes a big difference if it's not baking when you enter it.

4-5 TONS? I find that hard to believe! The brand-new Trane unit that cools my parents ENTIRE house to 60 on a day that's 90-100 out is only 3.5 tons!

Edit: I also find it hard to believe that the compressor, condenser and evap core in my truck that's smaller then the ones in my 5000 BTU window unit are capable of 4-5 tons of cooling.
