The internet is not...a dumptruck...it's a series of tubes...

..What if you take all the internet tubes and fill them with water? You'll soak our e-mail...

A window unit is far too small in capacity to cool down the cabin of a motorcar. 48-60 mbh (4-5 TONS) of cooling capacity is the norm. (I know the pic was a redneck type joke but some believe it. )

4-5 TONS? I find that hard to believe! The brand-new Trane unit that cools my parents ENTIRE house to 60 on a day that's 90-100 out is only 3.5 tons!

Edit: I also find it hard to believe that the compressor, condenser and evap core in my truck that's smaller then the ones in my 5000 BTU window unit are capable of 4-5 tons of cooling.

agreed. 4-5 tons is total BS.
Nope. You'd be shocked at how much BTUs of cooling power a car air conditioner has.

The thing is that people want instant cool. They don't want it to take 30 minutes for the cabin to cool down. That is one of the reasons they are so powerful. Another reason is because of all the glass.

After doing a bit of googling, it seems that 4.5 tons may be a bit of a stretch - maybe those giant two cylinder compressors used in the 70s.

Seems that the average nowadays is 1.5 - 2.5 tons. Still more than you would expect for such a small space, tho.

Has anyone ever replaced an evaporater? Evidently you have to take apart the dash - my friends tell me it's not worth it. Is it really as complicated as they say?

Yes the York RV2 compressor was a favorite for the Saturday mechanic to recover from a junkyard to make a decent home air compressor that when coupled with a 1 or 2 hp capacitor start motor at 1725 rpm could run most air tools or even a small sand blast tank intermittently! Popular Mechanics had plans for such a unit based on this compressor back in the 70's or early 80's.

You're not going to get 6+ SCFM at 90 psi from 1-2 (real) bhp from a tiny window shaker unit. (most are tin cans anyway ) 12mbh doesn't require the suction lift for such displacement even in free air let alone at the standard 90 (hose) psig that air tools typically run at.

And this.

Wow, the classic-aire is gorgeous!

Unfortunately we get a lot of humidity - how well does an evaporative cooler work in high humidity? That's kinda when I need it the most.
put a dehumidifier in your car as well. make sure the tank in the dehumidifier feeds into the tank for the evaporative cooler that way you don't have to refill it yourself. problem solved

The efficiency of the swamp cooler is drastically effected by excessive relative humidity. Thus their use is typically limited to arid climates. It doesn't shut down at a certain dewpoint, but will lose its effectiveness very quickly with a rise in the dewpoint.

In the southwestern United States they are a very effective way to cool houses and use much less energy since no compressor is necessary.

Replaced the evap on my mothers E300. That is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. There was nothing left but the steering wheel and a ton of wires.

Why do you need to replace everything?

Thanks. My friends were saying that - but this is a bunch of guys who also say that changing the wiper blades is hard, too.

Yup, car not worth fixing, then. Open windows it is.

Maybe you could post a request for old CPU heatsinks. I'm sure if you get enough of them, wire them up to your battery, and affix them to the roof it'll drop the temp drastically.
