Cooling Issue w/ E6600 and my first build

Hey everyone,

I just put together my first rig and thankfully I didn't break anything and it powered on. Well, I haven't got around to trying to overclock anything yet, but my processor seems to be running hot compared to folks I've read on these forums.

I'm using a TT Big Ty in an Antec P180 case, which I figured would keep my processor at a nice temp. However, idle it runs at 34-37C and running Prime95 it runs anywhere from 44-48C. I'm pretty sure I got the HS seated firmly on the CPU because I took a socket and really tightened those small nuts (that sounds really funny). I have all three case fans running on high as well. The sound doesn't really bother me but I wouldn't mind quieter, ya know?

So, is adding another fan or three (better ones like Loons/Nexus) the way to go or did I screw something up and need to take everything apart? Also, the rig has only been running for a day or so now but I didn't use any fancy thermal grease because it didn't get shipped w/ my CPU like it was supposed to, so I don't know if it needs time to burn in or w/e.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Will

hey, in a similar boat:

e6400 w/ stock fan

idling at 45C , i took off and reapplied the HSF three times, listening for the "pop" that its in, only 3 of the corners popped, but it seems really tight on there, when i start it up, it jumps to 40C quickly, then idles at 45C.

i have a crappy case, only small fans on the window regulating the airflow.

....just wondering what my mid-tower, stock fan, e6400 SHOULD be running at, temp wise

I don't see anything wrong with those temps. My idle temp is 37, with normal room temp and maybe 52 at 100% load for extended periods of time. I'm just using the stock fans on the P180 case, 2 on high and the bottom one on med. However, I have ordered another 12cm fan for the center section, my 1900xtx is running hot, but thats a different issue.

A couple of things...

1) Which mobo are you using? If it's an Asus, their temps tend to be way off! A lot of their boards measure the temp at the CPU socket instead of the CPU core. This causes abnormally high readings, and there's nothing you can do to cool the socket, you know?

2) Have you checked your bios settings? Maybe your mobo isn't recognizing the 'Connie' correctly. Plus, there are a lot of bios updates coming out right now, as these problem crop up. So, check your mobo maker's web site for the latest bios.

Sorry for not mentioning that!

I'm running the Intel BadAxe revision 305. Also, I haven't messed with the BIOS any just yet. I'm still reading up and researching overclocking and whatnot so I didn't want to go messing around with the BIOS before I knew what I was doing.

Oh, okay! Well the xbx is a good mobo, so that isn't the problem. Incidently, it'll do like 5MHz (or more) with hardware mods...

I'd do what you were mulling over in the OP -- more fans -- in with the good, and out with the bad!

Ummm.....no idea really. I know the CPU cuts down to 1600 MHz when it's idle by what PCWizard is telling me if that's what you're referring to. I just don't see how people are getting into the low 30s and even 20s with air cooling. I'd love to see a 5-7 degree drop and then I'd feel safe trying to OC it. It's topped out at 53C when running ORTHOS for an hour or so, would definitely like to see that a little lower.

Yeah, not that great. Upstairs, next to a window, and it's 100F outside. However, it's the best I can do. I keep the A/C on basically 24/7 to keep the rooms around 70 but that's it. I notice that early in the morning the temp is about 2-3 degrees cooler on the CPU than during the day.

I'd say those temps are great if real, considering how efficient P180 is for insulating.
(what are you using to read temps, btw?)

I also just put together my first build using the Antec Solo case, Asus P5B Deluxe mobo and E6600. My idle temps are between 40C and 45C. I have a 120mm Nexus fan on the exhaust and 2 92mm Nexus fans in the front, and I'm using the Scythe Ninja in passive mode. I hve checked these temps in the BIOS, Speedfan and the Asus software. Are those good temps? They don't sound too far off from what wtwhizz and Mudokon are reporting.

i put my system together yesterday, using asus p5b deluxe and e6600 as well. with P180 case, running the three stock fans and have the arctic freezer 7 pro. idle temps 34-35C. the fan at the back is set to medium and the top at low. seems ok with me. though i am not doing any OC at the moment.

Well I think I'm just going to tear the rig apart and see if I can't get some lower temps. I'll clean the old grease off and use some AS5, make sure that the Big Ty is tied down nice and tight and then see how that changes things. Prolly will add another fan to the front of the case where the upper HDD is supposed to go. 99% IPA can be used on both the HS and CPU, right? Any ideas which stores sell it at that purity?

Core Temp

This is a new program that lets you monitor Intel's "Core", "Core 2" and all AMD K8 chips' die temperature. The temperature readings are very accurate as the data is collected from a Digital Thermal Sensor (or DTS) which is located in each individual processing core, near the hottest part.

My E6600 @ stock with stock HSF idles at 40-45C, depending on the settings I use on my case fans. I'll most likely be replacing the case fans in the near future and throwing on a new HSF. The stock just isn't cutting it for me to hit over 3.2GHz under 60C.

Alright. Update: I tore my rig apart and cleaned off the HS and processor w/ some 91% IPA since that was the best I could find. I then applied some nice and expensive AS5 like shown on their website and tightened down the Big Ty as snug as I could. Put everything back together and added a fan in the middle where the upper HDD cage goes in the P180. I turned her on and I started getting a siren noise from the motherboard and I freaked. I turned off the power at the back of the caseas quick as I could and stood there horrified. Finally, I got up enough courage and I turned it on again. No siren. Everything booted up great and BIOS said I was at 35C. I've been running Orthos on the small test for about 30 minutes now and the processor has topped out at 50C. It idles at around 34-35C and the comp is still upstairs next to the window. So I've dropped about 5C off from before and of course AS says to give it 200 hours and it'll drop more so a big improvement I think.

Thanks for everyones help!

35C sounds about right from what I have heard others report so I'd say you are good to go. Might drop a 1c or 2c but dont expect a huge drop over the 200 hours.

Is the 35C you recorded from the motherboard's sensor or the digital one built into the C2D (monitored with Core Temp)?

CoreTemp registers my temps 2-3 degrees lower than SpeedFan and PCWiz, etc. During the day when idling it shows 33-34C while SF and others show 35-37C. Left it off last night, came in this morning and booted up and I've been running at 31-33C.

Hi, I also have built myself a computer last week, I used Asus p5b and core 2 e6400.
My bios reports my temps with the stock HSF of 52c idling and up to 67c on ful load, these readings are the same with PC Probe. But Core Temp says 43c idling and 54c ful load.
According to my bios my chip shoud be throttling down to prevent damage but it isn't doing that, so I guess that the core temp readings are corect. Or am I wrong?

I get the opposite on my Asus P5W DH Motherboard reports 38-40C idle, 48-50C full load, while Core Temp reports 50-52C idle, 60-64C load.

I think I'm going to have to remove my motherboard from my case and reseat the heatsink at this rate - it doesn't look good :S
