CoolnQuiet and CPU fan speed?

Does CnQ control the cpu fan speed? I've OC'd my AMD X2 S939 cpu and disabled CnQ in the process and it seems like my cpu fan is running at full speed all the time.

Why don't you try it and find out?

Most guides recommend turning off all power saving / fan control options in BIOS while finding your max overclock. Afterwards, turn CnQ / SpeedStep back on and see if you remain stable. Personally, I've never lost performance or had to back off my OC because of these features. Test it yourself and see.

I don't see why CnQ would control fan speed directly. On my mobo the fan speed is controlled by temperatrure, so in a way it only controls the fan if it can lower idle temps.

What he said. Automatic fan speed control is always based on temperature, most of the time you can determine the speed/temperature function yourself. But not all bioses support fan speed control and even if they do, some bioses only support PWM fan control, so you need to have a PWM fan installed (4 pin plug). Voltage control works on every fan, but don't think a lot of boards support it.

The other option is software based, but i think you'd know it if such a utility would be running

I never used C&Q on 939 sockets. It was quite unstable in those days. But if it works it works
