If you want an answer in yes or no and not in grey, then yes. He was riding a police motorcycle and in that effect he was representing himself as a police officer. So it wasn't right for him to race.
As far as the punishment is concerned, that is subjective and depends on your perspective since you're not representing the police department. I think the dept wants to show people that racing is not acceptable and won't condone it even if one of their own indulged in it (while representing the police that is).

You put other people at risk every time you drive.

Did he put people at risk more than usual? Yes. Did he do this to the extreme? I wouldn't say so.

I'd agree with you if he was drag racing through an active schoolzone, but it just seemed like the Cop was just being friendly with the locals.

Was that even a drag race? Neither of them appeared to be going significantly faster than the speed limit. It just looked like he accelerated fast (not a crime to my knowledge). It's also not the cop's fault that the guy uploaded the video on youtube and it got a bunch of hits.

If you ask me, that cop looked like a nice guy and the punishment didn't fit the crime.

But that isnt what happened. Punishment needs to fit the crime.

He wasn't fired for what he did, specifically. He was fired for lack of judgment and stupidity. Two things that are a serious liability for cops.

Think about it on these terms and you will see why him being fired was in the public's best interest.

Taking actions to their possible extremes in order to determine the punishment for the action is simply not logical.

I don't know if every state has this law but in CA you can be cited for exhibition of speed even if you remained below the speed limit the whole time.

Part of Dudes job was to stop this kinda thing. Not only did he participate in such action, but he did it with a Police vehicle and dressed in police uniform. This is a monumental failure in judgement.

Being Fired was a legit response.

I read somewhere today that the cop had been reinstated...I used to see him (the guy in the video) and a buddy cop of his riding around in pairs everywhere.

I actually just today saw the update to the story out of Maryland last year where the cop runs up behind a black guy, surprise pistol whips him, and discharges his weapon in the process. Cop lies in official report that guy went for his gun and that's what caused the gun to go off - cop prosecuted, not guilty of all charges.

Not sure I want to live in this world anymore.
