No, they really can't. Bike speedos are notoriously inaccurate and I've seen it as bad at 9% error (reading faster than you are really going). So, at 200mph indicated that's as much as 18mph off (higher than you are actually going). A typical 1000cc sportbike should be able to hit 186mph, which is very fast, but not much more than that. It takes quite a bit more power to get tiny gains at that speed. You simply aren't going to see 200mph+ speeds even on a modern sportbike.

What?

My friends aren't driving the cheapies. They have the Ducatis, Haya's, and some modded out other sports bikes to push them 200 and over like some GSXR (gixxer) 1000's and such. When I said they were going 200 range, I mean they were going 200 range down the highway.

This guy's like a motorcycle expert. I'm not, but I know enough to know that motorcycles have a hard time overcoming drag at very high speeds, and I just don't think your average rider or motorcycle is capable of exceeding 200mph. Also, the guy who posted that has his location listed as San Antonio, and I'd like to know where you can hit 200mph around San Antonio. The SH130 tollway is the only place I can imagine, but he made it sound like it was a regular occurrence.

I think most guys who say they have gone 200mph on their bikes are either full of shit or just quoting the speed read on the speedo which is just not very accurate at those speeds.

My current bike is a 150hp Ducati Multistrada 1200 S which will hit a top speed of approx 155mph. It has a few things going against it, it is heavy and it has a large windscreen. BTW-At 60mph indicated my bike is actually going 55mph (I have measured it using GPS and radar). That's about a 8% error. At 200mph indicated I would really be going 184mph.

I wouldn't say I'm an expert but I have been riding for a number of years and I do know quite a bit about bikes and what they are capable of. Thanks though.

I'm certainly not a bike expert. I had friends that ride that were the experts that spent tons of cash and time on them. I just hung with them. They told me they were going 200 at times so I left it at that. I have no way to verify it, but I take it as face value. As for where you can reach those speeds, there are plenty of places. 90, 281, 10, and 35 all have several long straightaways where you can reach max acceleration when there is little to no traffic on the roads. Around 3am is a good time when this happens for the traffic situation.

Me and my friends at the time all had it setup back then to do our partying during the middle of the week instead of the weekends. Which made the chances of being on the road at 3am with many moronic drunk drivers vastly lower.

I was in a fast enough sports car at the time and be on the highway with them. I wasn't speeding, but it was fun to watch them haul ass down the highway in front of me. Many times they would head out, find a turn around point, come back and do it again. It was seriously funny watching the cops in the distance flip lights every time they pass.

Out of curiosity, why did you need a fast enough sports car if you weren't speeding?

Overcoming the aerodynamic drag at 190mph takes an incredible amount of power. These guys added 41hp to a stock Hayabusa and the best they could manage was 193mph. They were making 207hp at the rear wheel and couldn't do it.

Odds are your friends were just going by what their speedometers read. Don't get me wrong, their bikes will do 180mph all day long, which is insanely fast on a bike, but 200mph? I seriously doubt it.

In all fairness, he said he didn't know this guy was behind him and trying to pull him over. Have you ever ridden a motorcycle? Granted, he was riding like an asshole, when you're riding like that you are focusing on what is in front of you, not what is behind you. Motorcycle mirrors are notoriously bad and it is difficult to make out what is behind you unless you are cruising along at 10mph and what is behind you is less than 20' behind you. Also, the faster you go the more wind noise you get. Even at 60mph it is a roar in your helmet which is why many riders wear ear plugs. Honestly, I find the motorcyclist's story quite plausible.

Sounds like motorcycles aren't fit for public roads and should be banned.

I will say a few of them worked in custom shops and heavily modded their bikes to put out more power. They all didn't do that but not all claimed to go 200 ether. Actually only 2 did. One with a heavily modded GSXR and another with a ducati. They were faster than the rest on their bikes as well as there were occasional races

As I said a few of them had money. They one with the Ducati also had a tricked out Enzo and a few other toys. Also to note, the one with the modded GSXR was a 5'6" guy we like to call superman as he loved doing stunts with his bike. He was fairly muscular for his slighter frame. He could easily tuck down and not create much drag while riding. He also liked to do stupid stuff on his bike during the day. I didn't witness this one, but he supposedly started on a wheeling on 281 heading south from Johnson city before finally turning off after hildebrand I think. Anyways, he ended up with several police cruisers following him and a few waiting for him after he pulled off the highway. Strictly speaking, during this stunt he was doing the speed limit and driving through traffic normally, if one considers driving on 1 wheel for that many miles normal. He didn't get a ticket from what I was told, but he a bunch of the officers laugh at him and asked him he thought he was superman or something. Which was how he got his nickname from the rest of the group before I met him.
