Well, my free P4 and mobo + RAM wasnt a P4.

Today I received an about to be junked P3 600, MSI 6163 V2 Mobo, 3D Prophet II GTS Pro 64MB and a CL Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Digital.

P3 came with a stock Intel Heatsink. Markings 600E/256/100/1.65v S1 SL3NA. Quick look at the mobo told me it was a Slot 1 affair. The P3 is said to be a Coppermine.

Mobo doesnt look interesting looking at it. RAM is in the slots but I dont know how much is there. ISA and PCI slots, SDRAM, havent seen ISA and SDRAM in a while.

3D Prophet II GTS makes me think GF2 GTS chipset which means its pretty nippy.

SB Live! makes me smile. Probably not the greatest Soundcard made but Digital and 5.1 make me think.

How hot do these P3 600 Coppermines run? Likewise with the GTS. MechBgon suggested ages ago in my silent PC thread using parts I had that I should go for a P3 Celeron-ish thing so perhaps this is the way forward. How good would they we with under/overclocking? Any chance of decent/cheap aftermarket cooling? I could make my own heatsink for the GTS I guess. Enough spare copper or aluminium.

This might also provide me with a good oppurtunity to play some of the old DOS games I want to play but without want of trying, havent been able to get working under XP.

EDIT: Topic Summary.

They run OK, and they can do Win 2k (never tried XP).
You'll want at least 256MB RAM obviously. No idea about heat (since it was in a Dell) or u/oclocking, but it basically had one fan iirc which was a 92mm exhaust fan mounted on the rear of the case which had a duct to the CPU/HS, so it shouldn't need a huge amount of cooling at stock speeds.

the only thing that XP needs more of then Win 2000, is more memory for the extra graphics and services that it runs, you can just run it in classic mode to increase the performance, or just make sure that you have at least 256Mb of RAM

A friend of mine was running XP Pro on the following:

Celeron 300A running stock at 333Mhz
128Mb of RAM, 2x64Mb SD RAM sticks (NOT DDR)
onboard ATI Rage 2mb graphics
4 gig HDD (he had enough room for like 1 game i think)
NO INTERNET - for shame

Oh and this was using a 14inch Compaq CRT, its funny because he said that he had a new comp so I came round to have a look and see if there was a possibility to OC (not knowing what he had), I then saw it and nearly burst out laughing .. lol I think my old keyboard is worth more then his PC.

Thanks for the replies.

Lonyo: I have 256 + 128mb sticks in the board PC133 too so overclocking is possible but I dont think I will unless by some miracle I have downwardly unlocked multipliers and the board for it. (reading stickers pays dividends)

Kensai: Diablo2 was once the bane of my existance. Now it is merely another game that Blizzard has managed to kill.

RichUK: I use the classic look and 'set for best performance' on my Athlon XP rig. Classic Win98 looks so much better than XP does. Thanks for the tips though.

My major concern is heat and noise. I hate slot 1/A coolers since they are so awkward and probably almost impossible to mod a heatsink for. How far do you think I can push the voltage down on the processor @ 600mhz to get stable? Is it worth it? Apart from reducing the voltage on the 40mm fan, is there any way to silence this thing?

The GF2 GTS I have looks nasty. Another dinky fan with a heatsink that makes most northbridge sinks look like monsters. I guess since it has a fan on it that its needed. Could I downclock it with something like Rivatuner and run without a fan on it?

Im planning to use an old generic case of mine with 80mm Panaflo L1A's 5v'ed for inflow/exhaust.

Im looking at a Seasonic S12 430W since thats the weakest S12 I can find in the UK. Yes its MAJOR overkill but its the quietest PSU I can find aside from fanless which are rather expensive. Any suggestions? The Seasonic could be used when I eventually move to 64-bit territory but for now, it seems like overkill, not to mention the 20-pin mobo and 24-pin psu.

Trying to make the PC very very quiet without spending much and using what I have as much as possible. Bearing in mind, I find my current PC a little too noisy for my tastes (Thermaltake 480W Purepower dual fan at lowest speed, 2x 120mm and 1x 92mm Panaflo L1A @ 7v, Zalman VF700 @ 12v) I need to be able to sleep in the room with it.

This P3 system looks perfect with some modding and will serve me well.

I had XP running on a PII 266 with 128meg of ram. It seemed to run ok but I never really stressed it at all. The only progs it ran was Yahoo messenger and IE.

I got a dual coppermine 600 system running my AD/file server/print server at home. Runs server 2k3 sp1 one just fine. I have an agp 9200 in it on a tyan 440bx motherboard, been running strong for 7 years now. Started out as a single P2 350.

Thats a good sign, seeing as Yahoo eats up tons of RAM. (at least more than AIM or MSN)

Another thing, is that my friends runs XP on an Emachines build with only 96 MB of RAM. It runs pretty decently for having such a sever lack of RAM.

I have a Compaq AP400 Dual PIII600 coppermine workstation that I use as my second computer at home, and it does not run hot at all. The CPU's have passive heatsinks on them and are effectively cooled by an 80 or 92mm fan with really nowhere to suck air in from near as I can tell. I think that you should be able to create a silent/VERY quiet PC if you work at it. Also make sure that Video card is apssively cooled. I had a GF2 GTS that rivaled a jet plane at times in terms of noise.
