Cops placed on "leave" after assault OR aren't cameras great?

The growing ubiquity of cameras will have one overwhelmingly positive outcome, which is the improved honesty of police. I know there are many who think that police acting in public in their public capacity should be immune to being filmed, and in some areas there are even laws against it. I can't wait until somebody brings such a law in front of SCOTUS and says once and for all yes it is legal. I would even argue it's one's civic duty. Without cameras, it can be difficult to tell the sheep (a normal cop) from the wolves in sheep's clothing (the animals, like the three in this video).

How there is still an open investigation over this is beyond me. Unless their argument is that they were taken over by an evil spirit it's pretty damn cut and dry.

Yep, it's very important.

Simple efforts by the police to prevent recording should have tangible consequences. Take money out of the cops' pocket, give it to those whose rights were violated. Doing something as deliberate and crooked as yanking a camera and erasing evidence should land you in deep shit. If they beat some guy half to death and notice they are being recorded, they should almost be more afraid of potential charges resulting from going after the camera guy than the initial beef; then the risk/reward would be appropriate.

I like how even the cop who pulls up late into it does a kick. Christ... you can't even try to cut them some slack about "heat of the moment" "adrenaline up" or anything... it's just straight up brutality. Disgusting.

I'm glad someone was filming and I think we do need SCOTUS to make it clear, filming police should always be allowed.

That said, I hate those jackasses who harass police with a video camera and create situations where they're TRYING to get the cop to "violate their rights"

What I find truly telling is that each police officer who kicked the person on the ground cared not for other officers watching. To me this means its pretty commonplace to happen and its only now coming to light.

What a fat piece of shit. Do they even have physical requirements to be LEOs these days?

They get paid leave, after having brutally assaulted someone who was clearly subdued and unable to do anything to them. How nice it is to be able to break the law and still keep your job, and still get paid.

By the way people are being arrested for trying to record things like this from a distance, and their phones get confiscated. By the time they get out of jail, or the case is dismissed their phones are not returned or damaged in some way by the cops. It is not against the law to record in a public area with any device btw. However some states and or cities are starting to enact laws to keep US citizens from recording things like what is shown in this articles video.

this is why many places tried to make it against the law to film a officer. As oldgamer said they will also confiscate your phone/camera if they think you taped it. you won't get it back working or with the memory card.

And stories like this are why I really question why people want to give up more of their freedoms and their own lives to people like this. Disarm our normal folk! Give the government more power!

Welll, here it is. These guys are the government. These guys are the ones you want protecting your life when you're no longer able to protect it yourself.

Fuck that.

First problem I saw, 10-year veterans

Definitely need term limits for police, the power begins to go to their heads. This also solves the pension crisis as well. Nobody can be entrusted to enforce the law for 10 years and not expect to be above it.

The most retarded thing, but a great parody.

No I don't agree, but I do feel that there is absolutely "0" accountability for law enforcement officers in this country, and the more they get away with these things, the worse it will get. It isn't simply a matter of more training, this is a mindset that police officers get when they are on the force for a long time. They see everything through "rose colored" glasses, and they suspect everyone around them, and start seeing everyone as a potential criminal to abuse. That whole, "well if they were doing something wrong, then I guess they get what they get" or the "if your not doing anything wrong then you needn't worry about this". I have several friends who are actively in law enforcement, and I can tell you one has been on his job for close to 20 years.. and his whole attitude from work has carried over onto his family leading to a nasty divorce from his wife.

They need to clamp down on who is actually getting these jobs and do a more thorough job of assessing their "mental capacity" and do more stringent psychology tests on potential police officers. Too many have serious mental issues, and get these jobs all too easily because they have some military background.

The elected officials need to do more to make it easier for people to come forward and file complaints. As it stands now most police stations across this country do everything they can to intimidate someone from coming in and filing a formal complaint of officers who have abused their positions or have done something truly unlawful. If you try to go into a police station anywhere in N.Y or in places like Chicago, you will run into a brick wall asking for the paperwork to file a formal complaint. They will try to run you out of the police station.

Probably a good thing the cops didn't realize they were being photographed, or the guy with the camera would have also been tazed, cuffed and beaten.

It's stories and videos like these that make me feel no sadness when I hear that an officer was killed. I merely hope that it was one of these types of garbage.

Sorry Arkaign, IMHO that is exactly the wrong response. Most cops are fine and descent human beings, so why judge an entire group for the sins of the few.

In the case of those Bridgeport cops caught on video, they need to be fired, and hopefully imprisoned for their actions.

After that, the tax payers of Bridgeport will pay the forfeit in lawsuits, as I cannot believe the chief of Police in Bridgeport saying these were the only two rotten apples in his department. When its far more likely that said chief fostered that culture of cop violence by always looking the other way.

But thank God for video evidence, when citizens have to police the police.

I agree with OP, having cameras and phones in just about every hand is a good thing. Instead of laws restricting the filming of officers, we need the opposite, strong laws protecting those who film/record public actions. Transparency is a good thing, public scrutiny is a good thing, accountability is a good thing.

For every 1 you hear about there are 1000 which are unrecorded and stories not believed.

We need a LEO blacklist for officers just like this.

Worst case for these officers it that they are released just to be rehired elsewhere.

Bet you wouldn't feel that way if you knew the subject was a black teen.

Stop being disgusting and racist.

Even a "Thug" (which you racistly associate with black people) being treated like that would get the exact same response from me.

The actions of these cops are the actions of playground bullies except on the playground the kid getting picked on isn't generally completely incapacitated before he gets beat up. A proper response would be putting them on unpaid leave and giving them a speedy trial. What would happen if I was recorded beating the shit out of a student in my classroom? I would be fired instantaneously. This is no different.
