Copy old ide drive contents to new SATA 150 drive

Just built a new Athlon 64 and have old hard drive from HP Pavillion that is being replaced. I have the IDE drive from the old HP on IDE Channel 1 and the SATA drive (new with no OS on it) showing on boot screen as being master on Channel 2 (IDE). I guess Windows (XP Home) is seeing the new sata drive as being an extension drive, because there is no second drive appearing in "My Computer" just the old Maxtor "C:\" and the DVD/CD drive as "D:\".

In the "old days" Ontrack had a little software program that would "copy entire disk contents from one drive to another". Hitachi doesn't offer it at its website for the Deskstar drive and I'm just not sure what the next step should be.

I may just have to install a fresh install (and call Microsoft and apologise for building a new computer after the old one died) and then run the serial cable for the Files and Settings transfer wizard which would be a pain in the butt.

Butt, oh well, if no better suggestions come across, I guess that's what I'll do.

Any better ideas?

Thanks!

Oh Yeah, I ran "Repair Windows installation" on the old drive after booting it on the new PC and it deleted the old chipset drivers, etc and reinstalled the ones for the new mobo and I've run all the driver cd's for the new vid card and mobo.

Thanks again!

Hmm, queer that HGST no longer offers a cloning proggy. But hey, not paying for a license saves some moolah and Ontrack's is slow anyway and a proper cloning/imaging proggy will be useful for backups so you may wanna wrangle a DOS version of Ghost. Otherwise, or for immediate use, try poking around for dm2000 or google for "free disk copy". I don't recall off-hand which "boot CD" may offer such programs but that is another option.

AFAIK, XP should have detected the new drive so long as CMOS Setup is correctly configgered [sic] which it seems to be if detected at boot (perhaps it could be partitioned and formatted from Disk Management... was it in Device Manager?... however that is sidetracking from what you really need to do which is clone) but each BIOS and mobo is diff'rent.

So first get a clone proggy and make sure you have the latest BIOS then consult the manual to ensure correct configgeratation of IDE & SATA... may as well make the SATA the boot before cloning. Also, if there is an auxillary SATA controller, I think those on the South Bridge are preferred.

Ah, I just did the "new" (i.e. no MBR) HDD thang and indeed it does not appear in "My Computer" or prompt for action but rather DM must be opened upon which it is "initialized", followed by a partition and format wizard.
