Just built a new Athlon 64 and have old hard drive from HP Pavillion that is being replaced. I have the IDE drive from the old HP on IDE Channel 1 and the SATA drive (new with no OS on it) showing on boot screen as being master on Channel 2 (IDE). I guess Windows (XP Home) is seeing the new sata drive as being an extension drive, because there is no second drive appearing in "My Computer" just the old Maxtor "C:\" and the DVD/CD drive as "D:\".
In the "old days" Ontrack had a little software program that would "copy entire disk contents from one drive to another". Hitachi doesn't offer it at its website for the Deskstar drive and I'm just not sure what the next step should be.
I may just have to install a fresh install (and call Microsoft and apologise for building a new computer after the old one died) and then run the serial cable for the Files and Settings transfer wizard which would be a pain in the butt.
Butt, oh well, if no better suggestions come across, I guess that's what I'll do.
Any better ideas?
Thanks!
Oh Yeah, I ran "Repair Windows installation" on the old drive after booting it on the new PC and it deleted the old chipset drivers, etc and reinstalled the ones for the new mobo and I've run all the driver cd's for the new vid card and mobo.
Thanks again!
