I have a new Dell Dim 8400 - I tried loading my Nero 5.5 but it shows no drive when I start it up. Apparently it doesn't recognize my drive (too new?). I went to Ahead Nero's website yesterday and today to run any available updates, but it just hangs - no download happens.

Does Windows XP have built in software for copying/burning CD/DVD's etc? I'm a bit tight for $$ so I don't want to have to purchase a new version of Nero right now.

Nero is useless for DVD and game copying, search can find you DVD copying info.

XP does have simple data CD burning for saving your own files, and there have been a few threads this year on freeware CD burning. Search again (the Advanced flavor) and check the Freeware thread at the top of this forum.

My sister, a non-techie, was burning music CD's on her Dell using some WinXP built in software. Now I don't recall how she did it. Guess I've been spoiled by Nero too long! Whatever she did, it was pretty simple.

XP has basic CD burning capability embedded into the OS.

Also, I think DeepBurner is still free and has some good features. Worth checking out if you're looking for something free or cheap.

You may need to update to the latest revision of the 5.x version to get the dvd burner to be recognized. I know I had to back in the early days of my DVD burner. Also, if your copy of nero was bundled with a drive other than the dvd-rw then you are out of luck, it will never work unless you purchase a key for the full version.

Actually, I tried running the update on my version of Nero and every time I try, the webpage fails to download. Maybe AHEAD software website is having problems the last few days. Just get page cannot be displayed - the update doesn't download. I'll keep trying though.

Download the newest Nero 5.xxx version and install it over the top of what you have now. It sounds like you have a version of Nero that came with a different CD burner. Most of the OEM copies of Nero were setup to work with only the CD burner that they can with. Do not run the update from with in Nero. Download the whole program and install.

Actually I have two copies of Nero, 5.0 that came with my LiteOn 16X CDRW, and a 5.5 version that came with a different burner. The 5.5 version works just fine on my LiteOn drives, so it must not be limited to one type in the software.

Anyway, I didn't try to upgrade it through Nero, but rather I went directly to the Nero website and tried to download the update to 5.X versions of Nero - but the page just hung. I'd click on the for when the dl doesn't start automatically and that window just hung. I still think something is messed up with the website... it has no idea what version of Nero I have...

Up date:

I have been downloading allot of utilities for fixing spyware issues on other peoples computers lately and noticed that the pop-up blocker prevents the download dialogue box from opening. I always have to click on the link listed to get downloads to work. However, even when I do that, the download link for DLing the Nero update still hangs.

BTW, I discovered my Dell does have burning software on it - Sonic Record Now. It seems to do the job. Anyone else use Sonic?

OEM copies of Nero (comes with burners) will only work with the burner that it came with. You cannot use a different burner with one of those Nero programs.

Try CDBurnerXP Pro, it is Free. It is far better than Nero IMO.CDBurnerXP Pro

Thanks, I'll give it a try. But that still does not explain why I can't download the update. I am not trying to update thru the software, but rather browsing straight to the Nero DL page. I should be able to DL any file like normal - I'm not even trying to install the update at this point, just download it.

Heck maybe I'll try it on my other PC and see if it will DL to it. Then burn it to a disk and see what happens. The worst that can happen is NERO still won't recognize the burner.

I'm a bit tight for $$ so I don't want to have to purchase a new version of Nero right now.

You can get Nero for less the $10. I bought it about 2 months ago from this place for $3.99 plus shipping:
http://www.softwareandstuff.com/SWW12281.html

Took about 4 days for it to arrive. Works perfect with my Lite-On and Benq burners. All the updates that get posted to Nero's website work on this OEM version.

It works great for PS2 games on cd or dvd's though

If you are going to get Nero, at least get 6.0 or above. I just upgraded to 6.6 and really like the new Nerovision, it has a very easy to use dvd authoring tool.

For almost all data I just use the built in capabilities of XP. It's easier to use than anything else out there, you don't need to start an app, just right click on the files you want to burn and send them to your burning drive.
