If your trying to save money then DON'T get all the streaming services at once. Switch back and forth.

Yeeaahh....about that.

We always have Prime (which we never use, but it's there because of shipping...) and Netflix. We'll have Hulu+ through the end of the fall/winter TV season, and also have Showtime to watch Shameless because that's one of our favorites. We also have HBO Now at the moment because my wife watches Girls and likes to stay current to discuss with coworkers ... and we'll keep that through the end of GoT. And then because CBS is dumb, and again, my wife likes to stay current, we also bought a season pass to Big Bang Theory through iTunes.

So ... for now we're paying ~$48/mo. :whiste: Really though, I'll gladly support that amount of content at that price until they start forcing crappy repetitive advertisements on everything. I'm sure it will happen to the streaming services eventually.

OTA is great, for the 6 channels I get via OTA. Can't really beat the price there either.

Yup. Love it! Grabbed a lifetime tivo ota (when they had the deal) and love the combo. Plays Netflix and all built in.

On topic, sling TV for a few months.

If you like sling tv then you might like playstation vue. It's a bit more per month but you are getting much more channels plus you can have up to 5 devices viewing. I prepaid sling tv 3 months to get that free roku deal but I'm definitely switching to ps vue. It's the closest experience to regular cable tv I've seen but that could be a negative for some people.

My folks have the $15/mo service from TWC. IIRC it's 2Mb down. Considering I was paying about $60 for 50Mb I'm seriously considering whether 2Mb is sufficient for my needs.

OTA still has the best image quality NS1...don't deny it!

250KBps would be miserable.

Also semi unrelated, but $15/month for basic internet has my attention. I'm paying around $60/month for DSL that's pretty slow (under 5 gbps) through Sonic.net. They tell me it's the best I can do with them. It does include free landline for continental U.S.A. though. My TV is just OTA by rooftop antenna, and I watch HD (and DVR) via HDTV card in my desktop. I do at times wish I had some of the basic cable channels. Can I do better???

It's Time Warner. I wish they had something a little better, like say 5mpbs for $20. But after the $15 2mpb plan it explodes to like $50 for 20/1.

Fix your antenna mate. I get about 50!

OTA sucks here. 5-6 Channels:

CBS: Good
FOX: Great
NBC: Still SD, Ghosted image
CW: Still SD Sometimes is not CW and instead some movie channel
PBS: Sometimes in HD otherwise nothing
ABC: Tower fell over, no plans to re-build

There's no money in OTA anymore, I can't imagine towers being maintained except in dense population areas where they might be getting subsidies. Use it while you can!

I'm guessing its not going away anytime soon in SoCal....but when that time comes I'll just find something else to do. It's nice not being glued to the TV.

Anyone tried Playstation Vue on either Firestick or Chromecast yet? On paper it looks pretty good - better than Sling.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Not only do they build and maintain, they increase range from time to time too. They pay money for the airwaves, if it was not profitable they would have stopped long ago. Besides, ota quality is far better then time Warner. Watching them side by side on a good TV will make you throw up on TWC

Now you might be living in a area where there is truely no signal, did you try tvfool to verify that? You might just need a better/higher antenna

What channels do you think we're missing on OTA? KCET? ION? I get those too but they're of so minimal value I don't even list them.

I'm getting cable back this Thursday BECAUSE...

I currently have an OTA + 100/10 connection. This costs me $70/month.

Through TWC, I signed up for their 70 channel plan, PLUS HBO, PLUS DVR, for the recockulous price of $80. The 100/10 internet add-on is +$10.

So for an extra $20/month, I get the same internet speed, cable, HBO, AND DVR.

Bye-bye NF.
Sounds good to me. How fast is 100/10 in terms of mbps?

I get a ton more than that but I usually leave my HDTV software in favorite channel mode, which is just FOX, a local station, CBS, ABC, PBS, NBC, and they all come in fine. I get a lot of other stations but mostly I pay no attention. I'm not much into TV, I watch some sports, occasional news, not much else except by DVD/BR, an occasional purchase of a box set.

I haven't even checked them out since the cord was cut here over 20 years ago. At that time there were several people in the house and we split the cable bill. Those days are gone. I'd watch other stuff with subscription TV, probably, but the only thing that motivates me to hanker for it is the premier sports I'm missing. For instance, the Final Four this weekend is on TBS.

I'm planning on picking up a chromecast this weekend and doing the vue trial. On paper it seems like a really good deal. I currently pay ~170 for direct tv with all the movie channels (and that's after negotiating a promo deal which is getting ready to run up and i'll have to call and battle to get again). I can get vue, plus hbo now for ~55 a month. I pay 68 for my internet with TWC for 20megs, but because competition is a great thing, my speed will be jumped to 100 starting in mid may.

So I want to watch the Walking Dead, I used to have comcast ages ago and just watched it on demand the next day. Just wondering if any resident streaming experts know anything about getting AMC.

I have netflix, hulu, and amazon prime and an OTA antenna. So for example on the chrome cast you can get HBO GO streaming to watch game of thrones. Just wondering possible ways to stream TWD on AMC.
ultimate cutting the cord cable/phone:

Ringplus phone service*: free 3k min/3k txt/3gig monthly data plan (or whatever the flavor of the week is).
3rd party tether program so u can watch on your laptop on a famous bay that's known for Pirates and kickass stuff

* A little bit more difficult now since new phones are not allowed on R+ anymore.
you must bring a Sprint compatible phone that's been in service for at least 12months.
(*cough* Freedom Pop refurbs *cough*)

I got a better plan. Just cut the cord and exercise more. It'll save you diabeetus pill and insulin money every month.

lolsucksman. Verizon tried that shit with me earlier this year, but at least it only would have been a lateral move from my Comcast plan, so I just told the install guy to go home when he arrived.

Still rocking my 80/6 with "basic" cable (+AMC, USA, CNN, Faux, Comedy, few other random selections) + HBO + HD for $63 (After taxes/fees) with Comcast.

That's a pretty good deal. I'm with Comcast Blast internet only and pay $82 a month for 150 down and they throttle the hell out of youtube (and anything streaming) so I wonder if the 150 is even worth it other than a solid connection for work. Was thinking of dropping another 5/month on a VPN to see if it ameliorates my throttling issues.

Of course my wife had to have Dish which is another 40/month but I have no control over that... she needs her ethnic channels which the internet can't replace (according to her).
