Can anyone confirm that Geil ULTRA PC2-6400 (4-4-4-12) (Elpida) will indeed boot up in ASUS P5B-E mobo and will allow to install WinXP WITHOUT a BIOS flash?
I wanted to buy this RAM, as it is the only one I can afford for my e6400, but the reviews on egg are terrible! People say that in order to run this RAM at a rated speed with no issues one must raise the voltage to 2.2... Well, how can I do that if the default BIOS doesnt allow that voltage? I dont have any extra RAM around to boot with that and THEN flash the BIOS to allow 2.2v.

Read the thread .

Corsair are good, decent quality and decent customer service in my experience but if you're looking for overclocking memory then you might want to try another brand as Corsair have not been using Micron D9 chips lately.

The original post in this thread has some really good memory recommendations.

Buffalo Firestix no longer use D9

Anyway Corsair makes good memory if all you want to do is the stock timings and speeds. You'd have to pay more (alot more) for their higher end sets to get alot of headroom.

In artificial benchmarks.

Or if you really want to pay $80 for 3%...

There are very few real world applications where it plays a role at all.

1. Video Encoding
2. Winzip/Winrar

And winzip and rar are kind of moot as it doesnt shave off enough time to matter.

In games youre talking very little gain if any going from garbage ram to gold, and unless you have a top-end system, spending the money anywhere else will yield larger gains.

@cmdrdredd,

Thanks for the info that Buffalo Firestix does not use D9 anymore. I was just about to take the plunge assuming they are D9.

If I remember you have Crucial. What would you recommend now? I need memory with headroom to go with my E6300.

What do you think about the G. Skill ?

the only gskill i'd recommend at this point is the 6400hz's that use D9's but they cost $300+.

@Shimmishim,

For that money would I be better off with Crucial Ballistics?

Frankly, I refuse to pay above $300 for memory.

Yes, get the ballistix. they use D9's as well and there have been some deals on them bringing them under $300.

I got my ballistix 6400's when they were around $180

I have two sets of PC 8000 (DDR2 1000) GSkill and no problems @ 490. I have one set of Ballistic, same speed, and already have one of the two sticks in the mail (RMA) that went bad after 30 days @ 490. And they won;t boot at all on my S3 boards. I have to put the gskill in, up the vdimm +.4, then shut down, and put the ballistix in.

G.Skill HZ or ZX series are the 2 I'd recommend. The HZ 800/1000Mhz parts use binned D9GMH and the ZX use binned D9GKX. They are above $300 (as is anything using D9 anyway). Crucial is good too, but mine died and won't do crap anymore.

my next memory will be either OCZ Titanium Alpha VX2, Mushkin Redline XP2-8000, or G.Skill DDR2-1000 HZ or ZX.

Hi. Great job by the way.

This is my question. I'm kind of a gamer and I want to build a new system and I was wondering if the near-100$ difference between DDR2 800 MHz and 1000 MHz is worth it or am I better off puttting that money on a better videocard?

I'm planning on buying on April an ASUS P5B-E and a C2D E6600 and overclocking it 50% (400 MHz FSB) and buying a "GeForce 8600 GT" (or equivalent when it comes out).

If you ask me: "What would you prefer between 20% more FPS or 20% less load times?"... I would go for more FPS.

What I want to know is how many FPS and load times benefits will I gain for buying 1000 MHz DDR2 (and using 4:5 ratio) instead of DDR2 800 MHz?

Oh! one last thing, just curious, I'd heard people driving the P5B-E's FSB to 500 MHz. I was wondering if it was with the ASUS stock fanless heatsink... is it really that good? :Q

That's all! Thanks!!!

You won't get a noticeable difference in real world terms. A frame here and there in high-demand games, a second loading levels or extracting from winrar. Not enough to justify the cost, in my opinion. Go for the more expensive graphics card and if you pick good enough RAM you should be able to overclock it a bit to match your FSB if you go past 400Mhz.

The heatsink will get hot, but it should be ok. Faster memory helps, but for gaming it's a better buy to get a faster video card first. If that's the choice you have to make, get the better video.

Am I in a time warp? Prices are supposed to go DOWN not up !!!!

Am I being discriminated against because better products are being available outside the US i.e. P5B-E Plus but not available here ?

What is going on here ?

I hate how you ALWAYS bash the NA retail prices and talk s*** about how everything is so cheap where you're from or just more available...cut that out...please.
