QUESTION: I just ordered some Corsair XMS2 2 x 1GB DDR2-800 4-4-4-12. These aren't D9 memory chips but what are my chances of getting it up to FSB 425?

Loosen the timings and up the voltage and you may well get that or higher. Trial and error.

Most elpida or promos should do that, DDR2-1000 is a much harder feat.

Did I get elpida? What are promos??

Sorry for the newb questions... but I'm a newb. =)

That GEIL RAM does not get very good reviews from what I can find. Is there anything better for budget DDR2 800 RAM?

Either way I think you should be ok... 425Mhz is not that much.

I'm looking for some guidance on what ram to get for a build I'm doing at the end of January. I plan on getting a C2D E6600 CPU, 680i motherboard, 8800gtx vid card, a nice CPU cooler, and would like to overclock it. I haven't overclocked a system for about 6 years and all the memory stuff confuses me. Can some kind soul explain to me the following:

- What does the asynchronous timing capability of the 680i mobo do for me?
- At what point does making your timings worse to increase FSB defeat the purpose of increasing performance?
- What ram do you think I should get for the above system and what should my goals be for overclocking it?

Thanks!

Thanks for the link! I got the Corsair myself, at $217 and likely a D9 due to being old stock I couldn't resist!

- You don't need to run your memory in a fixed ratio with the FSB. You can run it at its rated speed or whatever speed you want, really, while overclocking your FSB. (If my facts are right) This means you can overclock your FSB to, for example, 400Mhz without needed the standard at least 800Mhz rated DDR2 on intel chipsets.

- It's a kind of a vague area and I'm sure someone can answer it better than me but from what I've read and observed, after 5-5-5-15, decreasing timings becomes increasingly punishing to performance. If you have to loosen your timings past that to get much more out of your RAM then it's not the overclocking type. I run 5-5-5-15 but mine is overclocked from 533Mhz to 920Mhz.

- You don't need to break the bank for that system even if you're overclocking it but getting faster RAM will obviously improve performance a little, but nothing drastic or at times noticeable. I'd say get yourself a pair of good quality DDR2-667 or 800 sticks just to be on the safe side, you could get something like Crucial Value Brand I Can't Quite Remember The Name Of Right Now, or Corsair Value Select. I'm sure others will have some feedback on this for you.

I ordered the crucial ballistix PC2-6400 2x1GB set from ZZF. Arrived today and took off the heatspreader for a look. It's Micron, but D9DCL, not D9GMH.

Is this good memory? I found some posts that said this RAM doesn't overclock well and is "value ram"...

Thanks,
Mike

Ah wtf...Crucial decided to go & change it from the normal D9GMH

Only way to know for sure is to overclock it, but yeah, comments on XS indicate the overclocking may not be too good.

Try it & see

DCL is for when GMH is too hard to get hold of considering you also have higher bin parts to fill out.

depends on your o/c goal but the safest bet and most future proof is pc6400 or dd2-800.

assuming your chip could handle it.. 9 x 400 = 3600 or a 100% overclock.

So at the high end when overclocking RAM, what's the actual real world performance difference between 4-4-4-12-2T and 5-5-5-18? IE is it worth making my timings worse to bump up mhz? Does the answer change if you have a board capable of asynchronous timings?

Is it still a good idea to buy that RAM?

CPU clock speed > RAM timings, unless it's like an extremely minor difference.
