ahh, heck, you don't want that useless junky opteron. Just hand it over, and the MB too.

edit: honestly, I just went through the justification over with board etc to buy, and I can't see a single reason to buy the Core 2's at this point over a 939 chip. (I happen to have 2GB of DDR sitting around, hence the 939 vs AM2 choice).

Here's the reasoning: Socket F is coming in 6-9 months. It is the designated socket for K8L. Core 2's gain you almost nothing in real world gaming over an AMD choice and won't for at least 6, and probably more than 12 months - it's the GPU, stupid (to paraphrase).

If you don't have a high end rig, You can pick up an AMD 64 X2 3800+ w/ MB @ Fry's for about $200. Core 2's will cost you at least $450 for the combo (cheapest I've seen combo'd is $500). You can pick up a AMD 64 3800+ (or better single core) for a mere $130 last week.

Unless you're into photo/video editing with multi-threaded applications, Core 2 buys you nothing at this stage over either AMD chip mentioned above. By the time it will make a difference, AMD's answer to Conroe will be out, and from the initial looks of the specs, it looks good - you didn't think IBM bet blindly on AMD for its server line, did you?

Also, if money's burning a hole in your pocket, a $500 GPU or SLI rig would do more to improve your game than anything else at this point.

IBM also released OS/2 and failed to be smart enough to license out their MCA architecture (far superior to the original PCI). So, what's the point there?

What else have you been reading? Every review that I have read puts EVERY Core 2 processors performance above a similarly priced AMD processor. BTW, you can use DDR with Core 2...just look at the ASRock solution. Same price and you get better performance. Seems WAY more logical to me than buying a 939 platform that is drying up. I'm saying that and I've bought nothing but AMD since I got my P2-500 years ago.

And no, a $500 GPU or SLI rig will not do you that much good. Minimal performance gain over a $300 GPU for most people. However, if you have a 20" LCD and are running 16x12 with 16xAA, then SLI or a high price GPU might be for you....but those people have already ordered a Core 2....with a 975x MB to boot.

If you wanna pimp AMD, fine...go to OT or the processor thread. I'm one to talk, right?

Bump for the price....

Chill down, mrEvil. Lurker1 is just an AMD-fanboy.. That's all. Let's focus on the hot deal, shouldn't we?

While I can certainly appreciate a level-head in the midst of Conroe-hysteria, I DO see a resaon to buy a Core 2 over a 939. In fact, I see two reasons - performance and price. If you have an FX-62 then sure, stay where you are. If you are considering building a dual-core system presently, however, it would be silly to not choose a Conroe over a socket 939-based system that would be Conroe's equal in performance (or thereabouts). There are countless reviews out there now and Conroe is a clear winner. I mean, c'mon....an overclocked 6400 (or was it 6300?) that can hang with an FX-62? For several hundred dollars less? You need to keep in mind that most people here aren't ones who buy the latest and greatest every six months because most cannot afford it. Conroe is a low-to-mid-income gamer's dream. Hell, it's even a high-income earner's dream lol  It beats the best available right now, and in some cases by a significant margin -- for several hundred dollars less.

Bump for a good deal.

MCA superior to PCI? I think you mean MCA superior to EISA. EISA sucked hardcore. No way is MCA even comparable to PCI.

But wouldn't AMD's new chip be priced at a premium when it comes out? And you'll have to wait again.

Reading a thread over in CPU, guy got a 6600 from 2.4 to 3.0 on stock, and up to 3.6 using one of the higher end coolers. Just one example of course.

Fry's just sent me a notice that 6600s have an unknown delivery date now. Don't count on the 14th.
