Give or take a few pennies which should I go for? My mobo has died (s939) so I need to decide which processor I should go for before designing the rest of the system.

It seems hard to find benchmarks directly comparing these two so wondered if you have any opinions. I lean towards the intel as the 965/975 chipsets are native DDR2 right?

Most Intel chipsets out there are "native" DDR2. These two CPUs are generally well matched (which is why the price is matched as well) but I'd go for the E6400. It has much lower power consumption, it has a whole lot more overclocking headroom and is just a better overall investment. I'd go for an i965 motherboard, by the way, since the 975s are way more expensive and overclock quite a bit worse.

Wow!! Thanks hclark junior for the benches! Just what I needed

And thanks Furen for also answering my next question about the chipsets The MSI Neo 965 mobos look a bargain compared to the 975's. I wondered whteher there was much performance difference but thats for another post

With the Nvidia 680I's right around the corner, try to wait a few weeks. Their meer existance widespread in the retail chain will result in lower pricing of all 775 MB's.

For something new defiantely go C2D

C2D 6400 + a new S3 board is cheap and highly OCable. easily 70-80% more punch than 4600+ OCed.

i got an e6400 + asus p5b deluxe

i put it together, went into the bios, set fsb to 400 straight away, set vcore to 1.325.
and boom i had 3.2 ghz overclock stable. if i had better memory i'd try to go for 450 and 3.6.
i actually havent tried anything about 400 fsb cuz im happy with my 3.2.
so i dont know mebbe i can overclock even more.

Any idea on X2 vs C2D under XP-64? Been running the OS for some time now with my X2-3800 and have been contemplating a move to C2D.

You've completely misunderstood nyker96. He was saying that once you've overclocked your E6400 to 3.2 Ghz or higher, it will be nearly twice as fast as the 4600 will be, once you've overclocked it as fast as it will go. It won't actually be almost twice as fast, but the E6400 will destroy the X2 4600 for sure, especially once you start overclocking them.

too few people use this OS so most reviews don't bother showing it. Plus all the games that won't run properly and driver issues that pop up. I bet you'll see some people using Vista 64bit for benchmarks soon though.

Xbitlabs did a comparison using WinXP-64.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core2duo-64bit.html

Overall, AMD64 scales slightly better than C2D in 64bit... but when you are talking a 20% clock for clock advantage to C2D in 32bit, a 0 - 5% benefit in relative scaling is hardly going to tip the scales in AMD's favor. It closes the gap marginally, but C2D is still a good 15 - 20% faster clock for clock in 64bit.

No nyker96 did state 70-80% faster, I was asking for documentation. Not misunderstood at all, just asking him to validate his quote of "70-80%"

He's obviously exagerrating.

I'd say 30 - 40% is probably a more 'realistic' figure... assuming an E6400 overclocks to 3.2GHz and a 4600+ to 2.8GHz.
