Been out of the CPU game for quite a bit now and considering an upgrade. Last time I looked I was considering a new E6800. Has something happened as no-one seems to stock these any longer. Is it that the Quad based stuff has replaced it?

Thanks all.

The price difference between the X6800 and QX6700 is minimal. If you were thinking about dropping $950 on a processor, the QX6700 is the way to go... why pay for 2 cores when you can get 4?

If you can wait though, the price of intel chips are supposed to drop Q2 of this year.

If you wait you can buy Octo Core next year . Anyway Intel is going to launch revised edition of Quad Core CPU's which is more power friendly unlike QX6700.

Ah, X6800, of course. Told you I'd been out of the game for a while. Thanks for the info guyz, but there doesn't seem to be any 6800's in stock anywhere. Might be worth waiting as you suggest. I mean I'm sure I can wait a little longer.

Appreciate your time fella's.

You might want to consider getting one of the lower-clocked C2D's and just doing some light OC'ing. In another thread, I mentioned my plan to get an E6700, and was told to save my money and get an E6600, which will easily OC to over 3GHz.

If that's true, spending an extra $600 for the X6700 might not be worth it, because from what I've heard it likely won't OC much more than that lower C2D models.

If I was going to spend that kind of money for a CPU (which I might), I'd go for the QX6700, which potentially is 1.0x - 1.7x the processing power for the same money.

I got myself a E640 and OC'ed it to 3Ghz, if you dont wanna OC tho and can afford it, no harm going with the x6800... but i enjoyed saving my $800ish when i bought it
