I don't see any removable chips on the P5B Deluxe board. And the thing next to the Southbridge is definitely soldered on to the board. As far as my other problems, I tried to boot with different RAM that is known to work in another system and I am getting a different beep code. I'm now thinking that I just have a defective motherboard. 1 long beep followed by 3 short beeps. BiosCentral says this is a fault in the memory above 64 KB. I tried different 4 different chips, same result.

P5W or P5B? The P5W BIOS issue is well-known. Pretty much everyone it seems has had to send in for a new chip or hot-flash it. Lebowski's case is the first I've heard of problems with the P5B.

Lebowski: Where and when did you get the board?

Having the same problem:

Core 2 Duo E6400
Asus P5B Deluxe Rev. 1.03G
2 GB pqi PC2-6400 RAM
ATI AIW X1900
4 Seagate SATA2 250 GB harddrives
Antec Smartpower 2.0 500 Watt
NEC 3550A

1. Installed everything... fans and drives spin up... no video, no diagnostic beeps.
2. Disconnected all drives and ports not on the IO Panel.
3. I don't have another PCI-E video card available, so I dropped in an old ATI Rage 128 card in to one of the PCI slots. No video.
4. Removed motherboard from case. No visible anomalies. Reseated CPU. No pins on the LGA appear to be damaged. Reseated RAM. Nothing.

That's when I showed up here. The BIOS seems like the most likely problem at this point based on what I'm reading online. I'd love to hear if you have any success updating your BIOS and getting the Conroe to run.

I have a Pentium 4 630 in another machine, but I really don't want to have to dismantle that machine to get this one working. It's the only LGA 775 chip I can think of that I have access to.

This is the first time I have ever purchased an ASUS motherboard (I'm a Gigabyte man.) and it is very dissapointing to have it advertised as ready for Conroe when it is in fact not ready. (If the BIOS really is the issue.) I guess that's the problem with being one of the first adopters. I was about to order a Pentium D system, when I saw that the E6400 was in stock. And now...

I have built about 100 systems for business and friends and have never had a system not give me some sort of feedback. Very dissapointing. Let us know how it goes.

Ok, I can verify that you will need to get the BIOS flashed. It is also 100% related to the memory FYI. Inserting the 533Mhz stuff (PQI 25400) from my wife's system would allow the system to fire up ok). My new hardware:

Asus P5B Deluxe with Wifi/AP
2x PQI PC2-6400

The mainboard with the original bios will NOT post with this memory installed. I was able to flash the BIOS using a stick of the 544Mhz memory and flash it to the new 0507 version (released 8/11/06) and it works great now.

So you will a) need access to a PC to make the BIOS disk off the Asus site b) need to find some older DDR2 memory that this MB will talk to - I was very lucky I guess!

I hope this helps...

Edit: My original BIOS version was something like 0206 or something in the low 200's
