Core 2 Duo Or Core 2 Duo LV?

I am trying to order a x61 thinkpad, i am not sure which processor to choose. Is LV vsion slower than Core 2 duo? and how much extra battery life do you get?

The low voltage versions do decrease power consumption significantly.

Voltage changes power consumptions exponentially, not lienarly (is that a word?).

How much battery life you save depends on the battery, and the other parts in the PC, for example, integrated graphics will save you a tremendous amount of battery life over a mid range graphics chip.

depending on how much it costs and how much you care it might be worth it, but i generally think no.


core 2 duos are pretty good with power as it is, and its only one component of a computer. the most power using part of a laptop is probably the screen as it is. since all core 2 duos do a c1e halt speedstep, if you are mostly idle and probably will be it probably would not be a huge huge savings... maybe you will get 10 minutes out of it if you are a typical user. i would just take the money and buy another battery or an extended battery.

No, but linearly is a word. Good post, btw, except you forgot to answer his question. ezland, no, the LV and the ULV processors aren't any slower than the non-LV/ULV processors of the same clockspeed, they just use less power, and so they also generate less heat, to go along with the longer battery life.

Go with the LV, especially if battery life is a concern. It will make a difference.

there is a 1.8ghz LV for the core 2 duo mobile chips i believe, a 1.8ghz c2d is no slough for mobile performance either.

Another possibility is getting the regular C2D and then lowering the voltage manually (easier on some laptops than others; my HP doesn't really like undervolting too much but it usually runs at 1.05v, down from 1.31v or so stock. I definitely dropped my load temps by 15C.

would like to add that on my laptop, right now i have it set to run @ only 1ghz at all times, since 1ghz and 1.5ghz on my t5250 doesnt feel any different for normal usage like web browsing, word processing, music and movies. its only taking 0.95v too. i got about 30-60 minutes of extra battery depending on the operating conditions with the cpu @ 1ghz. i dont use it for anything too demanding, so the 1ghz is fine for me, but it may not be for you if you do more processor intensive stuff.
