Core 2 vs Pentium D

I have looked at and gotten suggestions on processors for my new computer.
A friend I know personally has a Pentium D 2.8 GHz and swears it is awsome.
A guy on this site, who I have never met, suggests the Core 2 Duo.
The Pentium D reportedly overclocks very well, and listed speed is higher.
I guess my question is: Which is best in the long run

Clock speeds can only be compared in the same processor family. I just replace my P4 3.06 which I had overclocked at 3.50 with a C2D that has a clock speed of 2.40, and it isn't even a contest. It's the same difference as a P3 to a P4 if not more than that even. I more than doubled my benchmarks with my new system

If you have a limited budget and don't care about power consumption (as in you are in a dorm and the school pays it all), get the 805 and a huge heat sink. Otherwise, buy a C2D.

Like the others said, not even a comparison. Don't waste your time with the old out of date flamethrower 805. You can't compare the clock speeds, because they aren't the same architecture.

Core 2 Duo without a doubt. if you get a smithfield, we will murder you! Conroe destroys all. it is the fatest CPU currently on the market.

Pentium Ds were a joke before C2D came out.

Now they're a bad joke.

To echo what else has been said, C2D > P-D by miles.

And while you are laughing, you can tell your friend that Pentium D is yesterday's news.

I should also add that the opening post needs to double check to make sure that his motherboard will support a Core 2 Duo processor.

my rig in my sig is awful because we dont have C2D yet (will get one soon though), but let me tell you. even an E6300 absolutely demolishes and utterly destroys any pentium model on the planet, whether it be overclocked or not.

C2D > any pentium (maybe even every cpu) out there.

Hey, lay off the Pinto...I drove one those in high school and I was the coolest...

Me too. Mine was the coupe, and had red plaid seats. It really was a nice little car. The only downside was it slipped out of control easily on snow and stuff. Most cars of that era did also though.

tell your friend to go pound sand. this is the easiest decision you will ever make.

you buddy thinks his current rig is "awesome" because he probably replaced a much older rig with it and therefore feels it is great because of this. but we are now talking about today and not a year or more ago.

the c2d is where it is at plain and simple. like others said, get a c2d and then your buddy can compare to the newest setup and feel his outdated machine.

the 805 you are referring to is more than likely from that horrible toms article where they got it to 4GHz - not likely to happen as i am sure they had more than 1 cpu on hand to get one that would even do it and the amount of cooling needed would be much better spent on current ddr2 and the c2d setup than making old technology produce a ton of heat and take a lot of power.

while you are at it make sure the m/b you get supports conroe (c2d) obvoiusly and also kentfield (quad core) for upgradeability.

There is only one good reason to go Pentium D at this point in time ... so you fell like you got a good upgrade when you get rid of it .

All joking aside, the Pentium D should be fine for a lot of people but it really isn't anything special. Currently the C2D is in the limelight as the chip to have, pushing the AMD X2 down a notch to second fiddle. The pentium D never really struck me as anything more than a dual core for the masses marketing tool by intel (to put it mildly).

I can't speak from experience, but from what I've gathered, here is my take on it:

1) If you are in the market for a new motherboard; there is no other choice but to go with Conroe.

2) If you have a non-Conroe compatible motherboard and really don't have much $$ to spend, a Pentium D could be a great optioni. The Pentium D 945 is under $200; its now slouch, but granted its inferior to Conroe.
