In this thread - I made a lighthearted joke in response to someone else mentioning Rippetoe. It also contained a thinly-veiled suggestion to not bother making those comments, because this would be the result.

In the threads you linked - in one I made an offhand comment and then actually contributed information to the thread, attempting to answer the OPs question. In the other thread, I made another lighthearted joke in response to several people high-fiving each other about their love of Starting Strength.

None of those posts created the unpleasant environment you suggest, and I in fact DO generally respond to the OP's post, with more contextual information than the link-post-crew does.

Regardless, it takes two to tango. Whenever one of these threads spirals out of control into not-on-topic banter like this one has, is a robot auto-posting for you, or are you actively contributing to this "unpleasant environment"? If you don't like that someone made an off-hand remark about Rippetoe, and then proceeded to give a lot of his own opinion, as jack ryan did, or as I have done in the past, maybe you should just ignore it yourself?

Its simple. Rippetie gets mentioned a LOT in this forum. Sometimes more than is necessary. Hell, brikis, glib as you might have been while doing it, you once posted that Starting Strength should be required reading before entering a gym or posting here! The response for that will be people commenting on how often he's mentioned. Your options are A) ignore it and move on with the thread, B) get defensive and throw a fit whenever someone does it, or C) mention him less.

My guess is option A would probably be best for everyone involved - its the avenue I've taken more lately, and frankly, should be the avenue you take. Instead, you choose B - which does indeed lead to a lengthy, off-topic flame war, and the "unpleasant environment" you complain about.

So there you go.

so how long have you been lifting?
First of all, this is argument ad hominem: you are attacking me rather than actually providing evidence against my argument. I've posted a good amount of information why mainstream "core training" is a bunch of crap. If you want to have a discussion, this is the point where you post evidence showing me how the BOSU ball leads to huge gains in core strength.

Having said that, I have been active in athletics of all sorts for most of my life. I have participated in countless types of exercise and sports, including running, climbing, gymnastics, parkour, hockey, soccer, football, basketball, tennis, baseball, skiing, powerlifting, bodybuilding, weightlifting, crossfit and so on. I have been consistently lifting for the last ~5 years and have read a large number of books, studies, and papers about exercise, nutrition, and so on. Despite all that, I have never made any claim to being an "expert" or anything of the sort: this is why I always try to reference other experts, such as Rippetoe, and provide EVIDENCE for my claims (such as the papers/studies I've linked to in this thread).

like the other guys said, no one is debating rippetoe...what they are debating is the same group of 'kids' that only know it and have just basically started it professing it for every need.
Should we instead listen to some old fat guy who damaged his kidneys during weight loss and doesn't provide a shred of evidence for anything he says?

I have said in the past and stand by it. Many casual lifters aren't looking to do deadlifts and power cleans ever, most probably won't go heavy on squats ever.

I tend to look at what they have to work with and recommend from there. Most just link to the fat loss thread or some SS dogma.
And as I've said in the past, most "casual lifters" do not achieve their goals. A large part of this is because of their choice in exercise & routine. If you want to keep recommending them ineffective crap, go right ahead. In the meantime, I'll try to point them towards the things that work.

For each person, I simply posted the first two links that came up with a search for "Rippetoe" and their username. If I bothered looking through more of the results, or tried other search terms (e.g. "starting strength" or "crossfit"), I guarantee I would come up with MANY more threads for each of you. And I assure you that many of those replies are 100% pure spam/trolling. Now, obviously, this is not all directed at you and yes, I'm aware that in other replies you are helpful. Moreover, if it had just been 1 or 2 isolated incidents, I would gladly ignore it. But this has happened so many times now that it is nothing more than trolling that is ruining this messageboard.

I'm certainly not without blame, but to be fair, I have ignored MANY of those posts. I've let them go, but I feel that at this point, they are driving the quality of information on this messageboard way down and felt the need to say something.

If I believe referencing something of Rippetoe's is appropriate to the situation, why the hell would I choose option C? Should I give worse advice instead because you are tired of hearing about it?

Moreover, when YOU see someone recommend something from Rippetoe, you ALSO have several options:

1. You agree with it and do nothing
2. You disagree with it and do nothing
3. You agree with it and make a helpful post explaining why
4. You disagree with it and make a helpful post explaining why
5. You agree with it and post some spam about "oh not, not rippetoe again!" and ridicule the poster
6. You disagree with it and post some spam about "oh not, not rippetoe again!" and ridicule the poster

Any chance you guys could limit #5 and #6?
