Looks like an underclocked Lynnfield for laptops. I would say the performance would be great for a laptop processor, but compared to an i7-860 or what have you . . . not so much.

very low clockspeed and voltage.

It would run great on a notebook though.

For gaming, a 2.4-2.8ghz dual might be better (depends on the game and of course the graphics chip)

Unless he's going to need four cores all the time in a laptop he'll benefit from higher clockspeed that the i5 provides.

How fast does the i7-740QM turbo two cores compared to the i5?

http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=49024 (45 watt processor.)

http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=47341&processor=i5-520M&spec-codes=SLBNA,SLBNB,SLBU3 (35 watt processor).

Maybe the real world "Turbo" for two cores ends up higher for i7 if the stock cooler ends up being larger?

The i7-720QM can Turbo like this:

Default-1.60GHz
4 core-1.73GHz
2 core-2.40GHz
1 core-2.80GHz

I'm quite certain you can add 133MHz to each values for the i7-740QM

The i5-520M Turbo:

Default-2.40GHz
2 core-2.66GHz
1 core-2.93GHz

I'd bet the best the i5-520M can do is rival the 740QM when running on 2 cores. It'll get beaten on higher core counts.

Back when I was comparing Core i3 reviews to Core i5 750 reviews looking at dual threaded games, I noticed Core i5 750 had much better IPC. Maybe this was from increased L3 cache and/or better memory controller?

Would this advantage for the quad core architecture still factor in at the lower speeds found with mobile?

I'd say for the laptop get the fastes dual core with HT, with 8 cores you will eat the crap out of your battery even at low clocks/voltages.

CPU world article said:
The Core i7-740QM is based on 45 nm Clarksfield core, which is built on Nehalem micro-architecture.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarksfield_(microprocessor)

Clarksfield is the code name for an Intel processor, initially sold as mobile Intel Core i7[1]. It is closely related to the desktop Lynnfield processor

"Clarksfield" must be the mobile name for "Lynnfield". "Arrandale" is the mobile name for "Clarkdale".

sorry lol glanced over that so quickly and saw Clarkdale instead of Clarksfield, doh.

Well I didn't know the name for the quad core was "Clarksfield" till you made me look it up.

Interestingly, "Clarksfield" is produced on 45nm process just like Lynnfield. Maybe this is one reason why its Turbo mode is limited to a lower frequency for two cores even though it is listed as having 10 watts more TDP than Core i5-540?

Dang, sort of missed this.

I am currently using a 1558 (720QM). Performance really is pretty good. A few things you should do when you get it.

1. Update the bios.
2. Update the Video card drivers.
3. Turn off power play

The laptops are somewhat buggy in their default settings. But if you do the above they become quite stable. ATI's drivers are buggy .
