You're going to need an aftermarket cooler for over 3 ghz, even if you didn't you would need one to get a decent overclock that'd make the whole investment worthwhile over a q9xxx.

Very similar to my build; get a aftermarket cooler if you want more than 3.0. It just runs too hot otherwise.

TR 120 extreme w/ 1366 bracket looks good...

I'm sitting at 3GHz getting familiar with my Core i7 920. I'm hoping MicroCenter gets some socket 1366 coolers in soon so I can really push the CPU. Stock cooling isn't cutting it.

Gotta visit there now.

Wow.. I never thought to check Microcenter, there's one in the town that I work!! Great idea. AdamK47.. you're sitting on a stock cooler.. correct? Also, if and when I get it stable at 3.8ghz and make sure it's a rock, how badly would the overclock effect the CPU life?

Not sure that's really a step behind at this point, a highly overclocked 8600 is likely going to be faster than a 920 for gaming, and a lot cheaper and cooler.

Yes, it's using the stock cooler. The temps shoot up as soon as you go above 1.20V and 3GHz with stock cooling. I've seen 80+ degree C temps. I have the CPU at 3.2GHz and 1.125V right now which puts the CPU at low 60s C at full load with 8 threads of Prime95. Not great, but it's good for these chips and stock cooling I suppose. It's been running Prime95 for about 14 hours now at this speed without error. I'll sit at this speed for about 1+ week and get a nice aftermarket 1366 heatsink/fan. That is if MicroCenter has them then. They should... I hope.

I've been playing with other frequencies while I use the stock cooler. The CPU is at 3.2GHz with a 200MHz base clock (200 x 16). That base clock is 100% stable, but only stable by increasing the VTT to 1.35V. 1.25V would cause a blue screen when booting into Vista. The Patriot 1600 6GB kit seems pretty good. It's running at DDR3 1600 with 9-9-9-24-1T timings and 1.60V (.05 lower than recommended). The QPI frequency seem nice and happy at 3600MHz. The uncore clock is automatically set to 3200MHz. So far so good.

well, I almost hit the buy button, but I am waiting for black friday in case any killer deals will be there on stuff I want.

MSI X58 mobo $220
920 $305 ($25 off in a combo deal, so $495 total mobo/cpu)
3x1gig 1600 $129

And a true 120 extreme, but I can;t find the adapter in stock.

I'm thinking I'll upgrade around Christmas time...hopefully there will be some 6GB DDR3 kits out a more reasonable price by then. 3GB is priced ok, but since I'm maxing out the 2GB my current system has, it doesn't seem like enough memory.

920 is $278 today at the micro-center in Fairfax Virginia....

Yes, another Microcenter fanboy here! That the condo I just purchased is in walking distance is not a good thing for my wallet. Not good at all!!!

*fighting urge to build new system* just like Markfw900. I seriously have one foot out the door. I even begged my friend to upgrade his 5 year old system just to keep me from needlessly upgrading mine!

Loox, you summed it up nicely. I just got laid off; but have trouble resisting the urge.

Im waiting for my custom blocks to get drafted for my P6T-Deluxe.

The entire board cooling is getting designed aigo style ground up. Also getting DDR3 waterblocks.

Looks like EVA isnt getting Can'd, only be using unlisted CPU's instead.

I purchased a Cooler Master V8 from MicroCenter. It was $85, but worth it. Also purchased a 40mm Silenx fan. Installing the V8 would mean I couldn't use the side fan on my Antec 900 and I wanted air flow for the chipset heatsinks. The Asus P6T has optional mounting hardware for a 40mm fan for the chipset heatsink, so I used that. The Cooler Master V8 fits with only around 2mm to spare from the side panel of the case.

Its a great air cooler! The CPU is currently set at 3400MHz (200x17) with 1.225V. An 8 thread run of Prime95 would cause the temps to shoot up to 75 degrees C after about 15 minutes with the stock cooler. With the V8 it's sitting at 58 degrees after 15 minutes. Much much better results!

Edit: The 1.225V is with load line calibration.

Like a lot of folks on these boards, I'm also planning to get an i7 920 system. It will replace my Athlon65 3500+ system. I was so close to buying everything this past weekend, but the online stores I use were out of low cas DDR3-1600. Hopefully more will be in stock around Black Friday. I got an email from a certain popular online retailer. It looks like a couple of the parts I plan to buy are going to be significantly cheaper on Black Friday. Perhaps it's a good thing I didn't buy the other day.

AdamK47: I've seen the Cooler Master V8 listed at a few places online. It looks pretty killer. One review I read said the only thing better would be to go to water cooling. Was it easy to install it?

I plan to get:
Intel i7 Core 920
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
DDR3-1600 8-8-8-24 timings
Geforce GTX260 Core 216
Antec 900
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W
Vista Home Premium 64-bit

Man I really envy you guys who live in the US, here in New Zealand computer hardware is overpriced to the extent that sometimes it is cheaper to have Dell to build your system instead. But yeah.. I'm gonna get a Core i7 920 ( maybe 940 after reading aigomorla's thread sometime ago...) to replace my P4 ( reminds me of a guy in this forum - can't remember his name). Too bad O/C is out of the story because I couldn't find any local stores that sell aftermarket i7 coolers and also it's summer here and the temp in my room in the day can hit 25 deg C.

I work part-time at teh microcenter in rockville. We have the coolermaster V8... it's better than the stock cooler... that's all I know... i'm putting one on my i920 tomorrow... right now my i920 runs at 70C stock under full load (i.e. seti on all cores) with the stock cooler... i'll give an update as soon as I get the new cooler on tomorrow.

It wasn't too hard to install. The instruction don't mention how to install it in a 1366 socket system. It has everything else listed in the install instructions. I used the socket 775 instructions and substituted the 775 back plate and cooler brackets with the supplied 1366 ones.

hahaha, people complaining about having to wait to upgrade because their system is too slow.

i am using a7n8x deluxe with xp2500+ and 1gb (bought 512 maybe, 6 months ago? was only using 512 until then). i had a 9800 pro aiw but gave it to my now ex. i have one of those fancy $40 ATI video cards right now, that isn't much better than onboard grahics. i've also only got 300gb of HD space (1x160 2x80). i've been waiting and waiting and putting off and now finally i'm ready to buy an i7. i still think i'm gonna wait until after christmas, but, yes, very soon.

2 years ago i bought a Lian-Li PC60 case, silverstone 600watt modular psu, and plextor sata dvdrw, and they're all still sitting in my closet patiently waiting..... soooon.....

Have any of you seen the Cooler Master V8 for sale online where it for sure comes with the i7 bracket? Every site I see it on just says "i7 compatible" or something to that extent. The only site where it seems to definitely come with the bracket is microcenter, but they're charging more than any other site.

I'm most likely buying everything tonight as I know about some special deals happening once the date is 11/26. If I can't find the Cooler Master V8 with the i7 bracket, I've read that the Noctua i7 cooler works equally well.

Here in Silicon Valley, Central Computers pretty much has everything - the CPUs, every mobo, every available cooler, and even 1366 adapters for $13.95. The new boards look gorgeous. Just Google them. Their site may not be fully updated, but their local Sunnyvale storefront is decked to the nines. Almost makes me want to do another new build, but my wife would kill me. Plus, I don't really need it.

Got the special edition Noctua cooler for 1366. Sadly, I only have the 650W Antec True Power Trio.. 3 12V Rails. I'm going to 3.8ghz but realistically will probably attain less. Will post tomorrow when I do it.
