Core usage app

Just wondering if there is a third party app that shows how many cores are being used while running an app, such as a game.

It will show you each core and how much each is taking its really neat enjoy it. Looks like this

Any particular reason you need anything beyond the Task Manager->Performance tab that comes built-in with Windows that already shows the CPU usage per core? I am not sure any third party app will be significantly different / "more accurate" than the task manager.

Speedfan, as mentioned, is useful. Use the Charts tab. I just use RivaTuner, you can set up the monitor to track quite a bit of stuff.

It should be sufficient, especially if you use the process filtering function of perfmon. It's somewhat disappointing that the orange line (usage of filtered process) only appears on the composite usage graph and not the individual core usages below it, but after some thought it really doesn't matter once you understand that 100% CPU usage can only be achieved by full usage of every core in the system.

Dual core system? process suspiciously stuck at 50% usage? yeah that app is single threaded.

Quad core system? process suspiciously stuck at 25% usage, yeah that app is single threaded.

^ Yes, OS balancing will switch a process seamlessly across multiple cores if available, even if at any one instant it might be using just one. Task Manager polling is an average over a relatively long time period compared to the rapid balancing/switching.

Use Task Manager to Set Affinity of a process to any combination of individual cores if you want to limit or test the process.
