Core2Duo 6300 - what should CPU temperatures be?

Running tests on system stability using prime95 on 1 core and my CPU temp shoots to ~57 from an idle of ~47. Running on both cores at once made it go to ~62 and then I terminated the tests.

My question is:
1) What is the max you can let it go to while stressing?
2) What should be the normal idling temp?

Using the stock cooler that came with it.

Thanks!

Try using the search function. This is only about the 10,000th C2D temp thread that's been started in the last month.

I'm currently stress testing my X6800 @ 3.6GHz.... @ 1.4v, the Intel Thermal Analysis Tool is reading 62c on both cores. (Watercooled)

The heatspeader may be concave, but I'm not about to lap an X6800. As long as it remains stable for 24 hours, I'm not going to sweat the temps...

EDIT: Devilishy: What are you using to measure temps? What kind of case cooling do you have? What is the room temperature? Are you sure that you installed all locking pins on the retail HSF correctly?

Well for a comparison, my setup is running with a 25% (2.667GHz) OC at the moment. Idle temps 42C and heavy load stress temps are 54C-55C. Room temp is kept @ 75F.

I was using the PC Probe s/w that came with the ASUS mb. I have the apevia aspire QPACK microATX case. Over the weekend I removed the stock heatsick and applied some arctic silver. (Of course, I cleaned the old compound first)

Now my idle temp is showing as ~38C and peak load with 2 prime95 running is showing as ~53. Room is kept at ~70ish with the ASUS s/w.

With the TAT tool it is showing ~3C less. I think I am well set now

It was just a matter of getting some high quality thermal compound (GO ARCTIC!) to get my temps down. I feel much better now

My mobo temp seems to be stable around 28-33 range. (idle and peak)

Thanks to everyone who replied with suggestions!

Intel now bins their CPUs by power consumption too(specifically the Core 2 Duos). Meaning the power consumption/heat from hottest to coolest would be

E6300
E6400
E6600
E6700

I am not sure about the Extreme version as its in own category, but from reviews I have seen it runs cooler than E6300.

So for best for power consumption/heat perspective, its E6700.

You can see from the Core 2 Duo datasheet that the HALT/Idle power is 20.0W for E6700 while all the other desktop Core 2 Duo models are 22.0W.
