Folks living in that part of Oregon having the river, town, bay, and original tribe of Tillamook Indians by the same name seem to pronounce it na-HAY-lem (rhymes with Salem).

Paul Otellini of Intel pronounces it Na-hay-lum.

 That's the way we've been pronouncing it around the office.

I always thought it was Neh-ha-lem

I thought the same.

I think it's because you're trying to make it sound like something in Israel when it's a place in Oregon.

Oregon?...now that's pronounced or-eg-ano, right?

Thinking of the overclocking - right out of the box skip GO, collect 200°C. Pronounce it as Napalm. Because that's how it will feel when touched.

Well, it seems from the information in this thread that there is no 100% correct answer - it's left up to individual interpretation. I know not having one correct, set-in-stone way can be somewhat aggrivating, but consider this:

Intel: "Na-hay-lum"
Oregon: "na-HAY-lem"
Various Hardware Enthusiast Messageboard Users: "Neh-ha-lem," "Nee-Ha-Lem," "Napalm"
AMD: "Oh $!@#"

ROFL...

You know when i first heard of this i always thought it was Niflheim.

The underworld, but i was like wtf is intel thinkn to name a chip like that.

For AMD i guess it is the underworld. And its dragging them into it.

Well if assume this guy is right:

The correct way to say it is the way you would say the name of the city which he writes as:

Nehalem nee-HAY-lem

I'm not used to reading phonetics but is that starting with "knee"? That's crazy talk!

Of course there is one 100% correct answer...it is Intel's chip...if they spelled it "ORANGE" but the CEO pronounced it "a-p-p-l-e" then the correct pronunciation for the ORANGE chip is defined to be "a-p-p-l-e".

Thus I tend to believe Inte's CEO Paul Otellini when he pronounces it as Na-hay-lum.

I find the thread kind of humorous and mostly pointless. It doesn't get any more pointless when you have video and sound of the guy saying Nehalem and yet people are still like "well I still thinks it should be said likes knee-hum-lay..."

I'm with you now, and totally agree! I think AMD used similiar pronunciation for Conroe as well as Penryn.
