Corsair 550W enough for 4850X2?

Decided on the Sapphire 4850X2 for it's 4 DVI output (looking to run 4x22" monitors here at work). Did a little research before ordering and found that the 4850X2 uses less power than 2x4850 CF, and found several references showing a quality 550W PSU was good enough for double 4850's in CF.

Here's the proposed setup:
MSI Neo-F 939 motherboard
AMD X2 4200+ @ 2.2Ghz (not overclocked)
Sapphire 4850x2
Corsair 550W PSU
4GB DDR
250GB HD
DVD burner
2x120mm case fans

Outside of the 4850X2, not much power is needed. The system requirements show a 650W PSU for the 4850X2, but I figure that's overkill.

Before I open the new PSU, surely 550W is enough to power the system with the 4850X2, right. I hope so.

Depends on the PSU & the rest of the system, if the PSU is rated at 550w continous (rather than peak) at a reasonable temperature AND your system is not overloaded then it will probably be OK.

Which corsair PSU is it? Do you have a link?

Corsair only has a single 550W PSU, and that is the VX550 which is rated at 50C and continuous

This is for gaming as well ?

There's cheaper options to get 4 dvi-outs.

550w corsair will be plenty ...

Then I would try it

Nah, it's for basic 2D desktop/AutoCAD only, so that's why I'm not really worried. I'll be surprised if the card is ever loaded to 100%.

Granted, I know it's overkill but the decision was made to go with the 4850X2 for it's quad DVI output versus other multiple card or PCI solutions. Besides, we tend to keep hardware for quite a while, so it will transfer easily to the CPU upgrade.

Thanks all.

Hear this, I run a 2.3Ghz AMD Dual core AND a Radeon 3870X2 on an old Chieftec 340Watt PSU. I measured them both (system and card separately and system) and they consume abou 90-160W each depending on the load.

I wont mention that I now feed the card with an on 230W AT PSU, separately.

WOW, my 100th post... :wine:

The Corsair 550 VX does have a 6 pin and 8 pin power connector (that is needed by the 4850x2)

I ran an Antec NeoHE 550W with one and had issues. Of course it didn't have dedicated 8pin connectors and I had to use a 8-6 adapter.

But I also run 4 hard drives, two optical drives, and various other things.

Anyhow I picked up a Corsair 750W and haven't had an issue since.

Still haven't had an opportunity to try it out yet, but I don't anticipate any problems. As stated earlier, it's certainly not cheap for simple quad-DVI output, but wanted to go with a single card solution. I'd be surprised if the 4850X2 GPU ever gets pushed to 100%.

Yeah, I'm surprised we aren't seeing more dual gpu solutions like this intended to drive multiple monitors more (or as much as) than boost single app/monitor performance.

No harm in trying. If you get instability or low performance, probably need to upgrade.

I had 4850 CF on HX520W for about a month but there were issues the PSU got quite hot while gaming or benching and i could smell something burning from the PSu a rubber like smell.
