Corsair H60 and LGA775

Hi guys,

I have an unused H60 that I want to give to my brother to better cool his Q9650@4.1GHz, but... the last time I tried mounting it there was not enough pressure and needless to say the cooling was abysmal. Looking at the manual it seems the H60 backplate absolutely requires that metal block which is usually found behind the socket on newer Intel boards. LGA775 doesn't have one hence no pressure against the CPU. What can i use to fix this situation without wrecking anything? On Thermalright backplates there's a plastic insert to compensate for lack of the metal block, but Corsair doesn't have anything like that.

I had the same issue with H60 on LGA1150. Sold it rather than engineer a solution.

I was thinking about dumping those thumbscrews and double-ended screws and just using screws to directly mount to the backplate.

You'd have to two-sided tape it in place but at least you wouldn't be fighting contact issues.

Add washers on the screws. That will shorten the screws and allow you to apply more force to the block when you tighten down.

Make sure that the washers won't touch any surfaces to cause a short. If they will, then use electrical tape between the washer and the surface location of the short.

Add washers on the screws.

Which side? Because I could never come up with an arrangement that reduced the plate-CPU gap.

If you haven't seen the mounting system used by the H60, look it up and the issue will become obvious. They made it much more complicated than need be in the interest of "simple mounting".

I just checked Corsair's website on the H60. It doesn't list LGA775 as a compatible form factor. I also checked the install guide so that I can get a visual on the parts.

Here's something you could try at your own risk. If you're not getting enough pressure with the supplied standoff screws not giving enough clearance to lock down the clamp, then you may have to ditch the standoff screws, and use normal machine screws through to the back plate to secure the tie downs. You will need to be careful not to over tighten the screws. Install the screws from the top down with a washer to distribute the force on each of the four mounts. Some heatsinks have a spring on the mounting screws which helps from over tightening the screws. You may want to look that up for your solution as well.

Again, at your own risk.

Ah, I see what's going on. The first result for googling "Corsair H60" is for the discontinued first revision (with the black fan), and the page for the current revision doesn't even show up at all.

I have the first version. It is (on paper) LGA775 compatible. Good idea about the washers. I'll have to get my grubby mitts on a more modern Intel mobo and measure that metal block for thickness. If everything ends up cool I'll post pictures for great Ghetto rigging justice .
