Is it me but reading around AT and Hard OCP forums. Alot of people seem to be having problems with this RAM and ASUS P5B boards.

The packaging says that the RAM is certifed for 800MHz 5-5-5-12 @ 1.9V.... That sooo BS!

In practice, this crap won't be ORTHOS "blend stable" for 15 seconds even do 800MHz at 5-5-5-18 @ 2.1V..

Test Setup:

Processor : E6600 at 2128 MHz (Auto V-Core)
MB: ASUS P5B Deluxe w/ WiFi AP (711 BIOS)
RAM: Corsair TWINX-2048 - DDR2 6400 @ 2.1v (5-5-5-18) (2:3 divider)

Does any one else have problems with this memory and E6600? As for the mean time, I suggest all core 2 buyers to be beware of this memory product.

If any one is using this RAM and having problem trying to OC their C2D. This stuff is probably the suspect to your less than stellar overclock.

UPDATE:

5-5-5-15 @ 1.9V @ FSB 470MHz, NB Vcore = 1.65.. everything else Auto hmm not so bad afterall... I suspect this has to do with the P5B lack of command rate (i.e. no 1T or 2 T settings.) in the BIOS. At higher FSB's the memory timmings are reduced automatically.

On word of warning Anthrax .... my same TwinX is very picky -its not that overclockable but its not too bad (manages 700MHz @ CAS4, and 850MHz @ CAS5) - but is VERY picky with the volts it has on it.

as an example ... at CAS5 - 800 MHz - 1.9 is rock stable for hours on end .... if you put 1.95v on it at 800MHz its stable for only 5minutes, 2.0 or above, only about 30 seconds ! So it definately doesn't like volts, try 1.9V.

the only time it needs a bit of volts is say at 700MHz CAS4 or 850MHz CAS5, but even then - anything over 1.95V (it likes a 0.05V when overclocked) - it crashes within 1 or 2 mins in Orthos.

I've had to work around the RAM limitations, so I now run @ 710 - 5-5-5-10, - 354MHz*4 fsb, which is about 3.2 gig with my E6600, as I said before, VDIMM = 1.9V

darn, my RAM really is pants (I'm discussing it on another thread too) - I can't really RMA it as it works perfectly at what its rated to do - I can't "expect" it to overclock

Looks like I found the answer.... All the Corsair 6400 1GB Dimms use PROMOS chips....agh!!!!! (Promos is know not to O/C well) dammit... You have to go for the 8500UL or Dominator to get micron D-9 chips.....

Yes - see my thread - with the answer I had back from Corsair ...

I know it runs at 800 MHz so runs to spec, but I almost feel like I've just paid for the Corsair Brand, but then got the cheapest of the cheapest RAM with fancy pacakaging over the top of it

Now I am really getting confused!!! Isn't Corsair twinx2 2048 ddr2 800 has become the flagship ram with Conroe processors with OC? Haven't Anand Tech's review used it for their standard test bed? I have read numerous user comments and review articles, all of them cheering for this ram. PCSTAT.com is just but one of them. I don't understand why you guys had such opposite results.

i have 6400Pro (2x1GB) and it is good on DS3 board. I even had it running 4-4-4-10 no problem. The same sticks on Abit AB9 can't even do DDR 533 stable. On AB9, Patriot Extream Performance 6400 did good for me.

you may just have bad board & RAM combo.

Nope, its a dog....

The whole XMS 6400 line all use PRO-MOS chips................. The good stuff overclocking class ram uses Micron D-9 memory chips.... For corsair , you need the 8500 and dominator series to get it.

Everytime I see people suffering from memory performance I feel relieved that I went with 975X instead of P965. My mere $187 DDR2-667 sticks do 425MHz (1:1) CAS 3.

/ end aggravating comment

Are you sure about the RAM using non-Micron chips? I've thought all Corsair RAM @DDR2-800 and above were made of Micron ICs.

haha, just because ram uses D9 chips dont mean that they will always be good and just because corsair doesnt in this particular line doesnt mean it sucks. you can make blanket claims that 'its a dog' but my ram is definitly the same as yours and definitly doing 5-5-5-15 ddr 960 now at 2.0 volts.

while it is true that D9 chips right now are all the craze just like BH5s were a year ago, and you can perhaps reach ddr1000 speeds with it, nothing is ever a guarantee. my old pair of twinmos bh5s ran like crap. others got crazy results. overlocking is all about the luck of the draw. sometimes you can make more inteligent bets but at the end of the day its still a gamble.

hope you have better luck next time =D

The 6400C3 are the best chips that Corsair offers. Some of the 8500's were D9GCT that was binned very high.

I had errors running both sticks...

Then I put in 1 stick and ran orthos, ran for hours no problem.. swapped it out with the other one into the same slot I had the good one, 5 errors in 10 minutes. Just ended up being 1 bad module in my case.

Corsair must have gone through a huge batch of crap with these CAS5 6400's.

Now it's just dealing with ZZF getting me a timely RMA

Got off the phone with Crucial a couple hours ago. They seem to think on memtest86+ is the ONLY tool that proves memory reliability.

Thats just not good enough for me... ZZF is going to exchange me to another brand.

Ok so why does my memory do 2.1v at ddr2-1000?

Same problems here, using them at 800Mhz and 5-5-5-12 @ 1.9V (which they're supposed to run at) won't last too long using Memtest86 and Orthos. Got errors pretty soon after I started.

I now switched to 5-6-6-18 instead (DRAM frequency set to AUTO in Bios) and didn't face any errors (yet; Orthos "only" running for three hours now).

Dunno if it's down to the P5B boards (newest Bios on my end) but they're definitely NOT working with the latencies they're supposed to do. I even checked another two brandnew pairs of them. Pretty lame, but maybe we'll see this fixed in one of the next Bios updates.

Oh well...

edit: Well, I should have taken a look at "The House of Help" support forums, I guess. There's a FAQ-sorta thingie which recommends the following settings for this typ of RAM when running @800 Mhz:

Motherboard make and model: Asus P5WD2 Premium/Deluxe
Each pair is tested and packaged together using the following settings:
AI Over Clock Tuner: Manual
CPU External Frequency: Manually set to 200MHz
DDR2 SDRAM Clock: Manually set to 800MHz
PCI Express Freq: Auto
PCI Freq: 33.33
Performance Mode: Standard
DRAM Timing Selectable: Manual
SDRAM CAS Latency: 5T
SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 5T
SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 5T
SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 15T
SDRAM Write Recovery Time: 5
Command Rate: 2T
DDR2 SDRAM Voltage: 1.9
Chipset Core Voltage: Auto
All other settings are motherboard defaults.
Maximum DDR2 recommended VDIMM: 2.1 Volts

From what I've read most memtest and blend errors come from the motherboard strap. below 401Mhz it uses really tight timings and loosens up after that. Means slightly less performance, but may change stability for some people. This applies to the P5B Specifically.
