I got a stick of Corsair XMS pc3200 512mb in my system now (not for long though hopefully) and i was wondering what speed i should run it at for the time being. I have to change the speed because for some reason by default it's set at 3-3-8-3, shouldnt be like that. My CPU is at 230 fsb. I have no idea what speeds to try with it.

I don't know what's up with Corsair recently. The last two batches I got were advertised at either Cas 2.5 or 2.0 and both SPD at Cas 3.0?

Anyway, I have run my XMS as low as Cas2.0 (2-3-3-11). Did have to bump to Cas 2.5 when playing HL2 for some reason. If I were you I'd try Cas 2.5 and see if it'll handle FSB 230.

EDIT: Might try bumping up the voltage. I'm not sure what chips are in my XMS. Some like voltage, some don't. My old 3200LL had CH-6 chips (IIRC), it didn't care much for extra voltage.

bump. 2.5-3-3-11 and 2.5-3-3-7 is too unstable, should i just run at the default 3-3-8-3? That shouldn't be the default speeds for it...it doesn't seem like anyways, maybe i should just RMA it, it's always been a huge POS anyways.

Do you have the model number for your Corsair?
What timmings is your XMS rated at?
because only the name XMS doesn't tell us anything.

If your tryimg to run it at 230fsb no wonder it's unstable. If you want it to run at 230 fsb you will need to relax the timings.

actaully the CPU is at default speeds now, wouldn't even boot when i tried the settings above. Even at default CPU speed though the memory speeds above are too unstable.

wow, if u are actually running at stock,
then it should go by SPD

does NF3 DFI have any complication with this particular ram?

SPD at 3-3-3-8 in otherwords.. look rather odd
thought the standard ones are like 3-4-4-8 ?

I think i'll RMA it, i'm getting another 512MB stick of value ram tomorrow, so i'll have 1 GB a value ram, and i'll just take out my XMS, since they don't work together anyways. Though i wonder what speeds i can run the value ram at, any ideas? Just default is ok?

Yeah the XMS has gotta be bad.

Just installed the 1 gig of Value Select and it runs at 2.5-3-8-3, or something like that. My XMS could never go that low. Can i overclock my CPU with 1gb of value select or should i leave it alone? Can't overclock much at all anyways.

you mean u got the XLPT version?

well, yeah, there is also XMS with C2 and etc..
so it really depends

the higher DDR modules are also labeled XMS but are at relaxed latencies
