I like how before when she said she had to wait on her congressional salary to rent a place conservatives attacked her for being poor. Now that she’s renting a place, conservatives attack her for being rich.
As someone else mentioned is the argument that she should have engaged in poverty cosplay, thus occupying an affordable apartment that a poor person could have otherwise rented?
This woman is driving conservatives insane and they are flailing with own goals like this.
Yeah, it's the usual damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't trap.
She has a bit of money. That determines how she lives. Is she supposed to play at being a peasant, like Marie Antoinette? We all know what her political opponents would say if she did that.
If a leftist politician is successful and has a bit of dosh (and US political salaries ensure the latter follows from the former) then they are 'champagne socialists'. But if they aren't that successful and are broke, then they are 'losers' and just motivated by 'envy'. There's no way to win in this rhetorical system.
What matters is what policies she pushes for and how successful she is at achieving them. If her having a bit of money affects her poltiics then by all means get back to me. I'm all for disparaging rich liberals where their wealth very clearly affects their politics (which does happen all the time). But otherwise it's just fluff and gossip.
In the end, if the system as it is can make everyone well-off, then it has nothing to worry about. If it can't, it's going to be challenged. That's the bottom-line, this sort of lifestyle-policing doesn't mean much.
